This is the 10th year of brewing the Old #1 barley wine. The 05′ and 08′ versions were awarded bronze medals in the English Barley Wine category of the North American Beer Awards. The 09′ version won a World Beer Cup Gold and has since been awarded a Silver and Bronze medals in the NABA in the same category. Deceptively subtle, strong hints of raisin, maple, vanilla, and black current work together in pleasant harmony. Aged for over a year, this beer has gained a stalwart following. Enjoy!

Brown color. Hops. Some oxidation unfortunately. Medium sweet with malt. A little fruit and caramel. Even with the oxidation, this is good.

Bottle. Bronish beer with no head. Sweet malt, caramel, light alcohol aroma with light citrus backing. Caramel, malt flavor with enough hops to keep things fresh tasting. Medium body. Lingering malt and light backing pine. Hops keep things lively, but are in background. Alcohol present in aroma, but light and well hidden in flavor.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with light roasted notes, as well as alcohol and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and alcohol, as well as light notes of hops, leading to a medium bitter end. The alcohol burns the side of the tongue.

Chestnut, clear; no real head. Cherry-like alcohol nose, alcohol and fusels. Very malty taste with higher alcohols. Surprisingly rich & aromatic character for some moments. Aggressive alcoholic & burning malts MF, slick, viscous nearly. This is all fireworks: it sparkles, thunders and shouts, but then it’s a black empty sky again. The palate is good enough, but it wants to impose too much.

Bottle Pours a dark muddy redish brown. Small off-white head and thin silky lacing. Aromas of apple-butter, sweet dark pitted fruits, and caramel. Flavors are similar, more woody and not as sweet as the smell hinted. Carbonation is soft and the feel is smooth and cloudy. Deep soft bitternes at the end. Doesnt taste like 12.9% though Im sure it will fell like it later.
