‘Viru’ (pronounced ‘veer-roo’) is becoming a well known Baltic states’ beer export. Brewed in the university town of Tartu, Viru is packaged in a octahedral bottle designed over 100 years ago, and thought to be based on the churches and towers of old Tallinn, capital of Estonia.

Ingredients: Water (from one of Europe’s deepest wells); Malted Barley (Lithuanian); Sugar; Saaz Hops; Yeast.

Originally sold by Tartu as A. Le Coq Premium Extra. The beer was bought by Brand Independence Ltd in 2006 and renamed Viru. It is contract brewed by Tartu for Brand Independence Ltd.

300ml bottle into schooner glass. Great bottle. Golden amber beer with light carbonation and lasting fluffy white head. Nose of sweet malt and distant vinegar. Full-bodied and malty. Finish is grainy with malt and late bitterness. Easy-drinking superior Euro-lager.

Shared 11.2 oz. bottle. Hazy pale gold with a small white head. Aroma of grass, light malts, and hint of fruitiness. Similar taste with a mildly sweet/bitter finish.

Love the bottle. Pours gold into the glass with a creamy head that lingers. Aroma is malty with light floral hints. Taste initially malty sweet, with light sweet and sour notes in the finish, but overall rather bland. It makes no glaring mistakes, but the bottle design is the only creative thing about this beer.
