The quality of the cold brewed coffee that goes into Texas Exile is important to us. That’s why we hooked up with MA coffee roaster Barismo. These guys are as serious about coffee as we are about beer. About 33 gallons of cold brewed coffee goes into each batch of Texas Exile right before fermentation, adding the perfect compliment to the brown sugar and oatmeal flavors of this huge imperial porter. Breakfast just got a punch in the neck.

Two consecutive years I sampled this beer with an older bottled on date. Hopefully the coffee held up in this vintage because two years ago it turned acidic and bitter. *sigh* Ok, Here we go, Pitch black color with thin tan head. Aroma is sweet dark chocolate malts with earthy coffee tones.

Flavor of mild roasted malts, burnt coffee, and dark chocolate. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a slightly acidic coffee bean in the finish. The bottle is over a year old and most coffee beers should NOT be held that long. I kind of expected the coffee to be turning at this point. Booze is also still lightly noticeable. Still better than the first time I sampled it. Perhaps I don’t really like this certain coffee bean. Still decent but I give up my search for a fresh bottle at this point.

Bottle to tulip. Aroma of coffee, alcohol and sweet malt. Pours an oily black with minimal brown head that only leaves a small collar. Wonderful taste of chocolate, oatmeal and coffee. Sweetness lingers. Moderate roast blends nicely.

650 ml. bottle sampled @ Barley Legal Tasting Room. Procured from Hopduvel upon Benzai’s recommendation. Dark brown, beige head. Nose is huge roasted coffee beans and fresh cup of black coffee, molasses, sweet, palm sugar, liquorish. Big roasted coffee grounds, palm & exotic sugar, black coffee, roast, molasses, light hazelnut, big coffee bean sour in the back. Thick coffee mouthfeel. Thick is just alcoholic coffee as opposed to beer with coffee, interesting, I like it.

Bottle. Ashy chocolate-coffee malt and alcohol aroma. Oil black with moderate tan head. Wood ash, chocolate and coffee ground malt flavor. Mildly bitter herbal finish. Very nice.
