This IPA refuses to be pale. In fact, it is a deep ruby red. This huge American style beer, originating from Oregon, uses West Coast hops in appropriately massive proportions, braced by a strong crystal malt backbone. Deep ruby red, earthy orange and caramel nose, sweet toffee start, peppery dark roast parsnips and a long bitter finish. This beer is a Hardknott classic and best exemplifies our American craft beer influences and our intention to shock stuffy traditionalists.

Cask at Tweedies Bar, Grasmere. Deep amber with a thick yellowy-beige head. Big floral and pine aromas and flavours all the way through but with a good balancing sweet malt behind. Dry finish. Great beer.

33cl bottle. BB 09/215. Mahogany color, thick, foamy head. Toffeeish, yeasty aroma, floral and slightly fruity hoppy. Flavor has toffee, nutty notes, yeast, slight tartness here as well. Bitter hops, very malty stuff. Heavy and musty. High carbonation. Not sure what to think of this one. Not very refreshing, nor are the hops presenting itself in any good way either.

Bottle. It pours a huge, semi-rocky light beige head over a clear, amber colored body. The aroma has a faint puke-like caramel maltyness, with resiny hops and citrus notes. It’s medium to full-bodied with, strangely enough, some warmth. Pleasant carbonation. The flavor has some caramel maltyness, a little sweetness and a balancing bitterness. Pine cones and some resins. Lasting finish with a little bitterness the most evident. A decent one, but far, far from impressive. 140315

The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a big dry hop liqourice bitter yeast grapefruit citrus palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A very decent beer and packed full of flavour. Deserves the rating.

Straggler bottle from 2013 Sainsbury’s Beer Hunt. Pours reddish light brown, massive khaki head. Smells of grass & strawberry jam, or... anyone remember Hawaiian Punch? Less synthetic than that but you get the idea. Taste is prominent bitter following initial sweetness. Well balanced. Thin carby palate.

Bottle from Sainsburys, Streatham, London - (on a special at 60p a bottle, bargain) copper/ dark reddish pour with an off-white persistent head and lacing. Fresh hoppy aroma and taste, caramel, toffee, slight treacle, hops citrus and a bit of toffee, great bitterness on this. Lovely drop.
