Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Draught from gingernanhattan. A reDdish brown. Not as oaky as I would have thought. A bit sour I guess it was the juniper.

a thick woody aroma. lots of burnt woods, and roasted burnt malt. loads of burnt wood flavour, and more burnt malt, this is super malty, and is dominated by wood. interesting, but quite one dimensional.

Bottle at Boreft Bier Festival 2010, Bodegraven. Dark red brew with an farmlike start, this will fade away. Than its gets an smokey sour/sweet fruity taste.

Bottle. Woody, smokey aroma with licorice. Flavor has fat bacon, smoke, beechwood. Smoky and hopbitter aftertaste. A huge taste bomb, there is nothing refined and balanced in this beer, but it is certainly a tasty and very interesting one.

500ml bottle. Pours clear copper amber with a beige head. Aroma: toasted grains, caramel, smoked meat, slightly medicinal. Taste: moderate sweet & bitter, roast malts, raisins, caramel, treacle, herbal, peat smoke. Medium bodied, light carb, lingering bittersweet smokey finish. Interesting!

330 ml bottle, shared by Werckmeister, thanks! Copper-brown, clear body, with a big, creamy, lacing, beige, head. Aroma of smoked wood, bacon, toffee, honey, some bread, some earthy berries. Tastes quite similar, with more dry wood and the smoke even more dominating. Medium, creamy mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation. Finishes quite dry, smokey, wooden, bitter, subtly sweet, a bit bready, with some earthy berries. Very nice. The nose is really lovely, with the smoke and wood notes well integrated into the sweet body. Taste is a bit too much dominated by the smoke for me, with a dry woodiness towards the finish. The nose gets more prominent as the beer warms up. Really interesting stuff overall. Score: 8 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 15
