Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Soft fresh leather aroma. Nice foam on cloudy brown. Flavour is heavy smokiness. Could be fuller on the mouth. Quite nice smoked in fact.

0.5 l bottle from 'Sterk Avondverkoop', best before August 2019. Clear, dark reddish amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky, slightly herbal-spicy and a bit fruity aroma of caramel, smoked ham, juniper, honey and some orange peel. Quite sweet, malty, moderately smoky, slightly herbal-spicy and a little fruity taste of caramel, honey, smoked ham, some juniper and traces of orange peel, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, quite smoky, slightly herbal-spicy and a bit grassy finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Well-balanced, unexpectedly refreshing and saturating, just a bit too much effervescence, other than that a pleasant smoked beer.

T- Mild candied orange, subtle bitterness, mild smoke, P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Not quite as good as I expect from HaandBrggeriet, although it was almost 3 years old. Not sure how that effected it.

Bottle. I guess I’m going off the smoked ales but I prefer this to the heavy malty black smoked beers out there. I am a little dissapainted however, I’m not getting that much juniper or wood, just smoke (but in a good Belgian fashion).

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers. Wood-smoked ham and toasted chestnuts on the nose. Clean and crisp on the palate with some juniper berry notes. Smoke is not overdone and sits nicely in the background.
