Japanse but basically Belgian-style spice beer spiced with sweet flags, a swamp plant I vividly remember visually and aromatically from my childhood as it has been introduced in western Europe in the mid-16th century and got quite well established here. Bottle shared by tderoeck, cheers! Moussy, bubbly, snow white, lightly lacing head, hazy yellowish golden beer. Aroma indeed reminiscent of the sweet-and-spicy, almost ginger-like fragrance of sweet flag rhizomes, overruling subtler hints of green banana, white bread, soap, apple peel and unripe pear. Fruity onset, bit estery with pear and unripe banana notes, green melon, sourish green kiwi touch, medium fizz, cereally and 'white' bready malt base; the sweet spiciness of the sweet flags dominates retronasally, ginger- or galanga-like, 'Asian' as it were, with breadiness, some residual sweetishness and a herbal hop bitterish accent below. I will never be the greatest fan of spice ales to begin with but this one is admittedly well-made, technically correct and very 'Belgian' in style.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clear gold with a tiny white head that dissipates almost instantly. Nose is spicy with some ginger, cardamom and arugula on the nose. Body is kind of watery with a nice bitterness present on the palate. Some rhubarb light sweetness present as well? Must be the shobu coming through. Some light fennel and nutmeg on the finish. Interesting beer. --- Beer merged from original tick of Miyama Blonde Shoubu on 06 Aug 2015 at 19:45 - Score: 7

Pours nice golden with a thin head that does not really stay. Looks maybe a bit watery. Aroma has some funny anise, herbs, something sweet and medicine-like. taste is also bitter and this anise flavour sort of overpowers everything else. I guess that is this "sweet flag" or whatever it is (googled it, wow, this waterweed is sweet flag? interesting...). Well considering that they are using this weed that does not look even edible, this beer tastes surprisingly nice. Pretty cool actually, I do like the innovative spirit of Shiga Kogen. Overall, unique beer that I cannot really say that I like - but I do have great respect for this experiment.
