So called because of its truly "ruinous" effect on your palate, this massive hop monster will change forever your preconceptions of what defines good beer. This is Stone IPA's big brother, and we mean BIG. We essentially began with our already-awesome Stone IPA, threw in an extra-large helping of malt, and added a lot more hops. And then some more. And then even more, resulting in a vibrant blast of citrusy bitterness that hits you on the first sip. Just one taste and you'll know why we call this indelicate jewel "A liquid poem to the glory of the hop!"

One of the first regularly brewed and bottled imperial IPAs.

330ml bottle at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Clear golden color with white head. Hoppy citrusy fruity, orange aroma, pine, light floral. Sweet and heavy bitter taste, juicy fruity orange and pine. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.

Bottle from G&M brought from SD. Almost clear straw yellow pour. Aroma is intensely west coast hoppiness, a bit grassy and resiny. Taste follows - very bitter hops, resin, pine, crisp, mineral (?). Crisp boozy finish. Very west coast, San Diego-style IPA with super crisp resiny hops. Good but not great. Reissued in 2023. June 11, 2023. So different than original rating. Classic west coast and very resin bitter forward. Kind over resin everything else, but it makes sense. Good biscuit. Palate is bubbly frothy good. Very good! 3.6–>3.9

(On tap at Akkurat, Oct 14 2014) Pours a very hazy medium orange with a big frothy whitish head and loads of lace. Aroma has lots of pine, grapefruit pith, orange, light tropical fruit, sweet pale malt core. On the palate, fairly sweet but not seriously so for the style. Hop forward to the max, lots of grapefruit and orange zest and orange flesh, dank hop resin. On the finish a huge wall of hop bitterness consumes the beer, grapefruit pith and flesh and a bit of pine needle, lingering malt just managing to hold on. A ton of hop bitterness sticks to the tongue and roof of the mouth at the end. Medium full sticky body with soft-medium carb that fleshes it out. Big bitter citrus-pine style DIPA with lots of bitterness and resin in the mix, admirably dry and not boozy (or really high ABV). Maybe not my absolute favourite profile, and nose wasn’t as outright punchy as expected, but still hops hops hops, definitely can’t complain.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle with a Best By date of 11/18/2014. Aroma is rather hop forward with a lot of grapefruit and pine resin. Some woodsy notes with some light orange and stone fruit. Light cracker malt notes. Not as fruity as the regular IPA. Pours a slightly cloudy, golden orange with a small, moderately thick, slightly off-white head that displays decent retention as it recedes steadily to the edges. Moderate lacing and medium long legs. Flavor has some light sweetness with some cracker malt notes. Fairly high bitterness with some medium light alcohol notes. Flavor has more citrus, though still mostly grapefruit than the aroma has. Moderate pine resin and woodsy hop notes, but less than in the aroma. A slight spiciness to the hop character as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low to medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent DIPA but I’m not a huge fan of the hop character; it has too much pine resin and woodsy Noyes and not enough fruitiness. This is my typical complaint about Stone beers.

Bottle from Saveur-Biere.com. Light amber, slightly hazy body, with a big, creamy, white head. Smooth aroma of citrus, tangerine, passion fruit, peach, berries, flowers, slight pine, biscuit, honey, even some bubblegum. Taste follows this seemlessy, also very smooth and perfectly balanced! Mouthfeel is medium, oily, with a moderate carbonation and it finishes bitter, also sweet, with lemon zest, pine, sweet fruits and malts. Wow, delicious! Really an exciting DIPA, that is end-to-end smooth, perfectly balanced, with loads and loads of fruity hops, but also a complex malt backbone. Definitely lives up to the hype!

Bottle. A- Caramel, malty, biscuits, sweet, doughy. A- Orange color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Very bitter, caramel, bready. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, lingering bitter finish. O- My bottle had almost a year of age on it which definitely brought out the biscuit and sweet bread notes, but it was still bitter as hell. I may be the only person on Earth who thinks Stone is far from the best brewer there is. I am yet to have anything by them that isn’t aggressive as hell and just flat out overrated. Thanks, but no thanks.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a snifter and a tulip. There wasn’t any difference between the two glasses.
The appearance had a semi - dark orange to brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. The lacing stuck nicely to the glass.
The smell had a super sharp pungent bitter piney and citrus hops overpowering my nose.
The taste had a great bitter pine and citrus hops pummeling my taste buds into submission.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium in body that wasn’t exactly as sessionable as I had hoped it would be as the bitterness just takes over.
Overall, I realize with this one, though I’ve had this several times in my life, I really think a good two months of age works wonders for this beer. It’s just too bitter and unbalanced when it’s only 6 days old.

Keg at the Brewdog AGM 2014. Aroma is really dank, orange peel, resin. Golden / orange coloured pour with a lasting sticky off white head. Flavour is huge piney / grapefruit dank hops. Really big in your face clean grapefruit bitterness. Palate is nice sticky resin, superdry finish. Benchmark double IPA.
