With a beer as bold and robust as Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout, it’s not easy to build another level of flavor. That’s why we use hundreds of pounds of espresso beans to give Stone Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout an added layer of rich complexity. The coffee flavors meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts for an intense complement of flavors, while staying true to the essence of this classic, historical style.

Black pour with a medium light brown head that dissipates steadily to a film. Small patches of lace. Aroma of roast malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with a roasty coffee character and notes of charred malt and bittersweet chocolate. The finish is roasty espresso and malt. Pretty good overall.

Can from Beer Baron. Pours a pitch black with a full finger of beige head that dissipates. Deep, rich cacao nib, espresso and treacle aromas on the nose. As it warms some vanilla and toasted sorghum comes out. Espresso on the palate with cacao nib and deep prune alongside more treacle notes. Booze hidden well, medium carbonation with a full bodied mouthfeel. Lingering coffee and cacao but not overly roasty.

Big bottle from Ralph’s in Dana Point. Opaque black pour with puffy dense light tan head. Aroma is roasted dark chocolate and some black coffee, but not as much as I expected. Taste is more interesting, same dark chocolate and coffee taste, with a creamy palate and lasting bitter bite. Very rich and bitter but sort of expected more of a coffee/espresso-forward flavor. It’s very good though.

The Aromas are roast, burnt coffee, Dark malt and a hint of fruit. Flavors are like nose, sweet up front with a growing bitterness into the end. A little booze comes on in the Finnish too. Okay body and carbonation.

0.33 l can from Spicy Days, Zagreb. Shared with little Dina. Dark. Lots of coffee in aroma, roasty malts. Some wood. Dark caramel. Aroma is spicy, quite bitter flavour, coffee persistent, roasty too, some sweetness. Good balance. Alcohol somewhat present. Warming. Medium body, very soft, finishes sweet. Slightly one sided but pleasant.

12 ounce can. Opaque black pour. Frothy tan head. Roasted malt nose hints at Espresso. Sweet roasted malt flavor has big boozy notes over rich Espresso. A bit of dark chocolate as well. Bold, black and boozy goes this one. Intense from start to finish.
