Beer with character that is balanced and very fruity.
Schaerbeek cherries originate from the Brussels Region, and up until the 1960s these local sour cherries were used exclusively for blending kriek. Unfortunately, the introduction on the market of pasteurised and sweetened industrial lambics marked the beginning of the end of the cultivation of this superb fruit as brewers of fake lambic switched instead to syrups and artificial flavours. Schaerbeek cherries are very delicate, and the harvest is unpredictable at best. On average, we still manage to acquire one or two tonnes per year from local producers, who are now few and far between.
The lambics we select must have enough character, while still retaining a fruity side. It takes two to three months of soaking to make Kriek Lou Pepe, and due to the very limited supply of fruit available production of this superb beer is limited to a few thousand bottles a year.

Bottle, 750 ml at the brewery. Dark ruby with white pinkish head. Intensive cherries, elegant soft sourness, juicy and elegant. Beautiful.

On tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Hazy to murky red with white head. Intensive cherries, medium to intensive sourness, some more red fruit. Not the best iteration, but very good nevertheless.

Smooth and slightly tart with some cherry juice, hints of funky farmyardy sourness. Surprisingly smooth and easy going, not as intense as previous vintages.

(re)sampled in 2023. Pours darker amberred. Small ring of bubbles for a head. Scent is aged candied cherries, almond, shining brightly on the schaarbeekse-specific qualities. Taste is sharp, tart, balanced acidity. Oak, funk (still very recognizable cantillon) overwhelmingly specific on the schaarbeekse (almond, cherrie, pits) . Medium body, medium to medium high carbo. To say this has held up well is a major understatement.

9/XII/23 - 75cl bottle @ BBGG winter 23-24, BB: n/a, 2008 vintage (2023-1164) Thanks to Benzai for sharing the bottle!
Clear red to red brown beer, small creamy light pink head, unstable, little adhesive. Aroma: lovely smell, very fruity, so much cherry smell still left after all those years! A little funky too. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity, lots of cherries, very intense, really nice, love it! Aftertaste: super fruity, lots of cherries, only slightly oxidated. Very nice one!

750ml bottle at share. Cranberry pour, wispy off-white head. Tart cherry aroma. Taste starts with a big pucker, lots of sour cherries, fruity, wine-like. So rich, so full. Definitely worthy of it's high rating. Honored to get to finally try this.

Aroma: smells very nice, dark cherries, cherry stones, some sweetness. Taste: along the same lines, deep flavour, low acidity, nice cherries, some funk. Overall: very nice.
