Oktoberfest Beer

Franz is our Oktoberfest beer. He’s an autumnal brew, a bit of a dreamer, often hikes in the Alps and comes back with great ideas for delicious malts and is forever hoisting barrels over his head for ’ze exercize’. Franz is our Oktoberfest brau, and our first take on a German brew. Not traditional, but über German. These malts will PUMP you UP, jaaah!

Can, contracted brewed by Full Circle (UK) for Beer52 'in contract with Rhinegeist'. Notionally at least its my first beer from Ohio. Pours a cloudy amber with small off white head. Has a caramel malt aroma with some mixed dried stone fruits. Taste has a rather heavy doughy and toasty malt, hint of caramel and a jammy stone fruit note. Oktoberfest beers can be a bit stodgy at the best of times lager wise but this takes it to a new level. The fruitiness offsets this somewhat but its very average.

Slightly hazy deep amber colour. Not sure if this is officially a lager, it tastes more ale to me. Its not bad, it coats the mouth and tastes of malts primarily and seems a bit more bitter than 21 IBU would suggest. A - bready, someone below mentioned marmalade, its just about there F - bitter sweet malt, bready slight honey, not as crisp as most lagers As lagers go this is pretty nice

330ml can via Beer52, BB 23rd September 2024 (brewed at Full Circle). Not too sure I should be getting an Ohio 'tick' for this. Slight murky haze to the amber brown body, fast fading off-white head. It's all a bit malty and bland to be honest, some hop bitterness comes through but this is a poor try at an Oktoberfest style beer in my eyes.

[33cl can from Beer52, brewed at Full Circle.] A murky amber pour with a loose cream coloured head; sweet wheaty aroma; caramel taste with a grainy body; and a sweet fudge finish with a touch of fruity spice.

12oz bottle. Immediately loses points for the description, at least it wasn't on the can. Really doesn't taste like a German beer. Tastes darker than the dulled copper body would suggest. No real lager tone, thin malt. Rather weak stuff, perhaps not unlike a Christian Morlein beer in body and quality. Not impressive on any level.

Pours clear copper with a one finger head. Caramel malt aroma. It tastes sweet with toasted caramel malt and a touch of hops. It’s alright, if forgettable.

Nice and crisp copper and bronze coloured body with a thinnish, one centimetre tall off-white head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of bread, yeast, light grain, hay, flowers and a dash of caramel with some toffee and even a light nuttiness on the end, but the majority of the scent is malts and earthiness. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong nutty and earthy notes dominate at first with a lot of caramelised sugars, toffee, grain and flowers here along with some nuts and assertive malted barley that persists and leaves off some of the yeast and bread here, but the punch packed is nice and robust, especially for the style. Aftertaste shows hay, grass, flowers, earth, nuts, toffee, caramelised sugars and especially breadiness from the leftover yeasts that permeate throughout, but provide enough sugars to make this rich, robust and complex, especially on the backside. Overall, a nice and robust, fairly full-bodied and flavour-packed beer that has a good deal of complexity for being a lager, but enough of a crisp and easy-drinking profile to ensure that it still feels like a lager and shows enough complexity to be robust and worthy of the month. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Kroger in Dayton, Ohio on 10-August-2021 for US$1,87 sampled at my house here in Washington on 18-October-2021.
