Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Depths of white pepper, banana, peach and apricot fuel the primordial beast of a belgian dark strong ale.

Bottle. A- Mild banana, fruity, caramel, white pepper, playdoh. A- Dark copper color, hazy liquid, beige head. T- White pepper, caramel, toffee, fruity. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Pretty good. I kept trying to pick out flavors but it all meshes together well enough that this task becomes hard. Smooth and full of flavors.

Bottle @ Malt & Mold tasting. Pours reddish brown with small frothy beige head, strong caramel aroma, medium carbonation, bitter caramel taste with dark fruits in the background, smooth body, long finish. Great brew.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/light brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, peach, pear, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of banana, clove, pepper, nuttiness, chocolate, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready/light roast malts, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, peach, pear, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of banana, clove, pepper, nuttiness, chocolate, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruit, cherry, peach, pear, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready/light roast malts, and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly drying from bitter/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.8%. Overall this is an amazing Belgian strong dark ale! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready/light roast malts, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV. Very rich and highly complex, with perfect yeast/malt flavor balance. Never overly sweet or heavy feeling, despite the sizable body. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Keg at Brewdog Brum. A heavy hint of booze in the aroma. Rum and raisins, liquor sweets. Jet black. The white head just clings to the rim. Instant boozy hit. Stewed fruit. The aforementioned rum and raisins. Smooths out with a macadamia nut finish. Medium bodied. Oily. Soft carbonation. Long heavy finish. Christmas in a glass, but I didnt finish the glass. Could have finished it if Id had another hour or so to sip it, but a fifth of a pint was more than enough before I had to head off. A sipper.

Tap at CYO for the Rhinegeist event. Pours a deep copper-amber with a half a finger head that dissipates quickly. Bready with a maple wood nose, slight booze. Raisin, plum and light herbal hops on the palate. Toffee and booze on the finish. Nice but, quite light on the palate.

Bottle shared by T.J. Why does this smell just like the Fluxion we just had 5 minutes ago?? Yes, the color is darker but it smells just like Fluxion, What the hell? Weak fruit, mild wax, light honey.

Again, no bottling date but I don’t think it is old. I get dark bread, nuts, caramelized sugar. And just a generic Belgian yeast. I stopped home brewing about two years ago, and I imagine my home brew would turn out to something like this. What is up with this brewery?

Poured from bottle thanks ClarkVV dark brown red pour with a nice tan head. Aromas of dark fruit dough bread and caramel malt. Taste is slightly sweet then becomes sour dough bread. Meh.

Bottle, undated, from JSquire, drunk 7/24/16.
Beige head shows decent retention. Dark mahogany body shows high clarity.
Just smells so sloppy and Americanized. What is up with this brewer, we keep asking. 5 of these different rarity series beers and they are all just terrible. No malt depth, one of the most unenjoyable yeast profiles I’ve ever smelled (wax, paper, dull nuttiness) as well as clove and heavy white pepper. No alcohol though.
Ooph. Yikes. Hard to put words in to how bad this brewery is. Basically everything that is wrong with American brewing of Belgian styles. This is so far from Belgian it’s laughable. Meat, veggies, bread, clove, peach, bubble gum. Grainy, toasty malt. Basically think of some of your least favorite aspects of beer and then take a sip of this. It’s all there.

22oz bottle pours a deep amber, basically purple, with some clumpy white head. Nose has candy and clove, lots of raisin, pear, some candlewax. Flavor has lots of candy and lots of raisin, mild bubblegum, cherry, pear, clove. Full bodied, sticky finish.

Draft: Cloudy brown-orange with a small tan head. Bright fruit, spray paint, yeast aroma. Taste is very sweet, dark fruit, malty. Subdued, but easy alcohol presence towards finish. Very smooth.
