Up until the Second World War, dark beer was the predominant beer type in the Munich area. The hard water found in the region played a special role in producing this specialty. In his book “Beer International”, the world-renowned English beer writer, Michael Jackson, accurately describes the Ayinger “Altbairisch Dunkel” as: “A good example of its kind. Impenetrably dark with a golden-brown gleam when held up to the light, and with a warm aroma and malty taste, while summoning up coffee taste sensations on going down. It is brewed from five types of malt (two of which are torrified dark), and it is only lightly hopped.” It is produced using the traditional double fermentation process.

Közepes, tartós hab, barna szín. Karamelles, fűszeres illat. Enyhén édeskés, karamelles, kissé fűszeres ízvilág, enyhén borsos aromával, a csípőssége nélkül. Közepesen testes, közepesen szénsavas, enyhén keserű. Finom, jól csúszó, jó egyensúllyal rendelkező sör.

From May 2006

Poured from 500ml bottle a very dark amber with a medium sized head of foam that dissipated quickly leaving just a fine layer with some lacing.

The smell is a strong scent of roasted malt that suggests some sweetness is waiting for me in the taste.

The taste up front is also of roasted malt, lots of it and there's lots of chocolate notes there as well making for some nice, sweet, yummy goodness that lasts all the way through the finish. Man, I could easily drink a couple of these...err....I have done that before. lol

Bottom line: I've had this Dunkel many times before and I'm glad I've finally reviewed it. It's a winner that I can easily recommend cuz it's just so damn tasty!

0.5 l bottle from ’REWE Budnik & Homberg’, best before November 2017. Clear, dark reddish amber with a medium large, dense, stable, off-white head. Sweetish, malty, slightly roasty and a little grassy-spicy aroma of caramel, toasted nuts, some chocolate and hints of straw. Quite sweet, malty, slightly roasty and even a bit fruity taste of caramel, raisins, toasted nuts, some prunes and a touch of straw, followed by a short, slightly bitter, a bit roasty and a little grassy-spicy finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very nice Dunkel, really tasty, quite deep for the style as well.
