Looking for a fresh take on Oktoberfest beer?

Breckenridge Brewery's fall seasonal combines the malty goodness of a German lager with the clean crispness of an American ale. Brewed with Munich malts and a delicate blend of Bavarian hops, our Autumn Ale is a full-bodied treat with a nutty-sweet middle, a warming alcohol level and notes of toasted grains. A pre-winter winner.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin off-white and tan head that fades very quickly and leave nothing on the top or the sides. Light-bodied; Strong earthy and especially nutty malts with a lot of grain notes at first and then bringing out some caramelised sugar and toffee notes. Aftertaste shows some of the light bready and yeast notes, but the malts are obviously right at the forefront, with some light sweetness from the pitted fruits and caramel, but there is little else, aside from the heavy malts here - no hops to speak of, nor any bitterness. Overall, a pretty standard brown ale, but perhaps even a bit less complex than average, given that until I saw this was an ale from the label, I would have classified it as a Marzen, given I thought it was a lager - that said, this is purely passable, of course, but this is far removed from a DECENT old ale. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Wegman's Grocery in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-October-2021 for US$1,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 28-October-2021, just a bit more than a week after purchase, a few days before Halloween!

12 ounce bottle. Mahogany brown color with red highlights. Medium-sized creamy beige head. Faint toasted malt nose. Sweet toasted malt flavor is smooth and silky with dark caramel and nutty notes. Slightly resiny hops in finish, though understated. Overall, very drinkable, but unremarkable.

Very solid. Unsurprising from Breckenridge.

Bottle. Chestnut in colour, with next to no head and slight carbonation. Dar fruit and brown sugar aroma. Flavour was much the same, with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Ok.

A dark brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with light grassy hops, dark fruits, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with light chocolate, plums, licorice, nice.

Draft @ Cuban Burger, Harrisonburg VA: Charcoal nose. Ruby black, medium tan head. Charcoal and cherries flavor, dry. Nutty pecan finish. Medium body. Not overpowering, but still enough flavor, good transitions. Color and body are atypical for the style.
