Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

Bottle split at Islo tasting, thanks to Daniel O’Sprey, 07/07/16. Golden orange with a decent off white head. Nose is toasted grains, tangy citric rinds, straw, bread dough. Taste comprises orange jelly, lemon rind, grains, light spice, yeast esters, bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok formulaic Belgo affair. Should have tossed some pubes in maybe?

Bottle shared at Craft Beer Co. Islington - London. Many thanks to Daniel! Pours clear gold with a white cream topping. The nose holds mellow rindy citrus, faint pine. Moderately sweet, with notes of dry white bread, biscuits, jammy citrus fruits. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet, sugary finish, with more doughy white bread, vague fruits. Simple, enjoyable.

Bottle at home, 03/08/16. Mail order from that place in Lille. Sweet and subtle aroma. Floral. Fruit. Deep amber. Initial frothy white head retreats to rear guard action around the inside of the glass and a whisp across the top. Bitter sweet, with more of the former in the dry finish. Light and frothy mouthfeel. Again I’d go for subtle. I like it. One thing I would add - the Ratebeer profile refers to 5.6% ABV, however the bottle states 4.8%.

Bottle at Craft Islington, big thanks to Daniel. It pours clear amber with a thick white head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, white bread, candy, soft sweetness, banana and stewed orange. The taste is crisp, bitter - sweet upfront, banana, candy, apple, barnyard, earth, straw, pear and melon with a sweet finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Fun to try, but overall its way too sweet for me.
