Pile O’Dirt Porter falls into the robust porter category. Characteristics of this beer style are a dark (almost black) color with a creamy tan head. The aroma is of sweet malt with a hint of roastiness reminiscent of cocoa. There are notes of chocolate and coffee in the flavor balanced with malt and caramel sweetness. This is a medium-bodied beer with moderate hop bitterness and negligible hop aroma and flavor. Pile O’Dirt Porter is brewed with the finest quality pale ale malt with Munich, Extra Special, Blackprinz and Chocolate malts added for color and flavor adjustment. Perle and Willamette hops are added to balance the sweet maltiness of this porter. Original Gravity is 15.2°P and alcohol by volume value is 6.0%.

12 oz can. Very dark brown. Fizzy light brown bubbles dissipate completely within seconds. Appears thin. The aroma is chocolatey with a good dose of cola and a light metallic twang. Thin, simple caramel aroma. Weak caramel sweetness in the taste. Cola underneath. Mildly nutty. Sticky and somewhat cloying. Medium to thin body. Light herbal hop bitterness in the finish. Messy flavor without much satisfying roundness.

Many thanks to jsquire for this can! Deep brown with a very fast disappearing head. The beer is smooth and nice chocolaty. Roasted bitter in the aftertaste, not too deep, but refreshing and easy to drink. A bit viscous and very dry. The aftertaste is dry roasted with a nice intense bitterness. Roasted malt, dry brown burned sugar, nice bitterness.

12 ounce can into pint glass, no can dating. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop and roasted bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice American porter! All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Can at home via trade to get me some Dakotas since my trip fell through this summer. Dark brown pour. Faint nose of nestle chocolate. Tastes of cocoa nibs, cola, earth, brown sugar, vanilla, hint of molasses. Everything subdued and semi sweet. Could use punch up

12 oz can pour. Much thanks to Chris for helping me knock off South Dakota. Pretty good porter here. Soft chocolate and dark fruits aroma. Slightly dusty flavor with more dark fruit than anything. Some chocolate. Dry, roasted malt finish. Pretty good stuff.
