Hops + hops + hops!
Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution
When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.
Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.
Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.
Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

A hazy, golden beer, a head is small and blond. Aroma is strongly citrusfruity and grapefruits, some tropical fruitness and peaches, not so fresh anymore. Taste has peaches and tropical fruits, grapefruits and medium bitterness. Medium bodied. Should be tasted more fresh. Anyway, good beer.

330 ml can from Ales by Mail, bb 21/02/2016
Dark yellow to orange, hazy body, with a big, fluffy, lacing, off-white head.
Aroma of grapefruit, passion fruit, pineapple, orange, citrus candy, some pine, some biscuit.
Tastes follows this, with a bit less grapefruit, more juicy fruits and some earthy notes.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes smooth, medium bitter, quite dry, piney, citric, zesty, fruity, slightly malty.
Tasty. Quite light bodied and easy, with lovely, fresh fruits and just enough malt body. Some interesting earthy notes, with nice pine notes in the finish. Well balanced, crisp IPA how I love it.

Bottle from Craftissimo at home after Clockenflap 2015. Slightly translucent orange golden pour with frog eyed bubbly head. Aroma is fruity hops but somewhat muted - maybe not so fresh. Taste is a mix of fruity hops with more old world straight bitterness. Some tartness too. Interesting mixture of hoppiness. Very dry finish. Not bad at all but probably wouldn't get again, just not my type.
