Carlota is a smooth, spicy stout inspired by the magical cuisine of Mexico and created by Cervecera Macaria. This is a complex beer which uses 7 different malts, 4 different chilli types, cocoa husks, cacao nibs, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla! Fermented using a Mexican lager strain of yeast, during the maturation phase we add a prodigious amount of ancho, pasilla and mulato chillies as well as smoky chipotles. The resulting beer is a rich celebration of warming spice, raisiny sweetness and chocolate goodness.

Hops - Cascade, Goldings
Malts - Low Colour Maris Otter, Wheat, Crystal, Munich, Brown, Chocolate

Cask at the Guildford Arms. Pours clear dark brown with a thin bubbly beige head. Aromas of roasted nuts and dusty cocoa. Taste has a tickle of heat, some liquorice, more cocoa and light spice. It's a little thin, but not bad.

Cask at the Colmore, Birmingham. Poured almost black in colour with an everlasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt. The flavour is moderate to light liqourice bitter, with a light, slightly watery, earthy, mineral, big chilli spice palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. Looks great but a real mess of a beer. A light watery stout with tons of added chillis. Thornbridge can do better than this.

Rocky light brown head left a froth on a near black body. Caramel, malt & nutty aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & soft with a thinner clean back. Chocolate, nutty, malts & cocoa tastes with a bitter hoppy chilli hit on the finish. Only canned 2 weeks ago so quite ripe. Deep Heat.

On tap at Brewers Cooperative. Pours black with a tan head. Smoke, chocolate, capsicum bitterness, vanilla, chipotle, some chilli heat to finish. This is how a chilli beer should be done. Touch of chilli peppering the tongue but all those other notes allowed to dominate the flavour. Delightful.

On tap at Coach and Horses, Dronfield - Dark brown near black body, small tan head. Nose is dark chocolate, spicy chili masking everything. Taste not as spicy as hoped, smoky malts and coffee rinds to the fore. Bit flat. Not a massive fan, and I’d looked forward to this one.

Draught @ Christian Firtal, Odense. Thornbridge tap takeover. Pours Black with a creamy beige head. Roast, good coffee and a whiff og ash. Smooth and full bodied with a bit of warmth - perhaps a snap of chili. Well brewed!
