Punk IPA is the beer that kick-started it. This light, golden classic has been subverted with new world hops to create an explosion of flavour. Bursts of caramel and tropical fruit with an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee, precede a spiky bitter finish. This is the beer that started it all - and it’s not done yet...

PUNK - Quintessential Empire with an anarchic twist.

Malts:
Marris Otter Extra Pale.

Chinook, Simcoe, Ahtanum, Nelson Sauvin.

Given a 16 oz draw at Bjor Gardurinn in Reykjavik, I am happy to try an IPA at the end of a long trip. Semi-clear, basic IPA yellow with a frothy white head. Great carbonation. I take a sniff, hay and citrus. Taste is lemon, a soft hoppiness and a hint of herbs. Yeah, it is okay.

$1.95 can, WW. Clear gold with a soft off-white head. Floral hops, citrus, bready malt in the nose. Flavor is bitter lemon and grapefruit zest, green grasses, almost banana... It's fine, but it doesn't stand out like the ratings indicate it should.

First Tallboy bought at a supermarket. Boy, that didn't help the aroma at all. At times it's lovely, but there's so many vegetal notes which suggest that not only storage wasn't ideal. Seriously underwhelming.

Decent IPA, more generic than I was expecting, very mid-Oughts in its amorphous pine-citrus bitterness and mild toasted cracker malt notes. Grapefruit, resin, and a touch of passion fruit lead to a clingy, moderately dry fade. Not bad--good with pizza--but nothing life-changing.

On key keg with secondary fermentation so therefore cask. Appearance - golden with neat lacing. Definitely lower carbonation than usual Punk. Nose - resin and light note of fresh sweat. Grapefruit. Taste - grapefruit and light resin. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture. Dry balanced bitterness on the long finish. Overall - even more sessionable than regular punk.

Smells like pine-tundra shower gel - very forest floor in nose. Also, big grapefruit going on. Hazy appearance. More grapefruit, pine and a background maltiness which I don’t remember from the original.

I only drank 100ml in Hamburg, and with spicy food, so it seemed very subdued and balanced to me. May 2019 (3.5) Drank a bottle from 2019 beerwulf advent cal. Well balanced. Great ipa.
