The usual The Abyss greatness. Big vanilla, roasted malt, molasses, licorice mixed in with what the cherry bark brings. I love it fresh, as

22 oz bottle, 2012 edition, bought in L.A., at home. Pitch black color, thick brown head, which doesn’t last very long, thin layer retention. Aroma’s of hard roasted malts, ground coffee, bit of wood (?), light berries. Retronasal there’s a bit more (red) fruit. Flavor is light to moderate sweet, and the roast gives it a bit of acidity and bitterness. Alcohol feel is not too strong. Medium bodied - would be nice if it had been a bit fuller. Finishes with roast, ash, bitter. Lovely!

On draft at the GABF 2013. Pours black with a tan head. Flavors of black currant and tobacco. Bitter roasted finish.

Update January 2014. On draft at the Independent Ale House in Rapid City SD. Impressions pretty much the same, but it was nice to savor a 12 oz pour in a real glass.

My last bottle, infected, mixed with some Pako's IPA, makes it drinkable.
