Technically, there is no such thing as a traditional Belgian stout, but we went ahead and made one anyway. In creating the beer, we took the aspects we loved in Belgian beers and used them to craft a stout. We brew Allagash Black with 2-row barley, torrified wheat, oats, roasted barley, chocolate malt, black malt and hop with Northern Brewer and Glacier. A generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar produces a hint of raisin in the finished beer. The addition of oats lends Black a silky mouthfeel, which is enhanced by rich flavors of coffee and dark chocolate.

Bottled. Dark, dark brown to black w/medium tannish head. Tastes and aromas are malts, coffee, chocs. Surprisingly light, and pretty drinkable.

really nice black pour with a coffee head. Great robust roasty aroma with notes of coffee, chocolate, and some yeast. Flavour is quite roasty, but super smooth. A slight lacticness in theaftertatse, but its welcome cause it cuts the bitterness. Great brew.

Pour is more of a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is some chalky brown ale malt with a little bitter bakers chocolate. Flavor is more of a toasted malt and bakers chocolate with some black licorice. A little thin and not much Belgian comes off this but this has just enough malty goodness to make this a flavorful stout.

12 oz bottle on 5th Jan 2018, poured into a lovely Kasteel glass at my daughters in California. Sediment was allowed to leave the bottle, so I got really dark bodied beer, slight haze overall, but still looked good, sadly the beige/lightly tanned head soon turned into a thin wisp and collar. Malts rule the roost here, chocolate and liquorice in both the nose and taste. Had a few Belgian Stouts over the years, found them very sweet, thin bodied and very un-Belgian usually(meaning uninteresting and boring), not too sure what makes this a 'Belgian style Stout' because it isn't sweet, thin or boring!

Sample at the "Black Friday 03" tasting on 11/24/2017. Dark brown color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of dark chocolate, malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of bittersweet chocolate, roast malt and earthy hops. The finish is chocolatey with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
