Mighty, bold, and black as night, our house stout has gained a reputation for being contagious among the locals. This is no dry Irish anything, rather a strapping American Double Stout with a sweet undertow and addictive hint of roasty goodness. The name honors this brewer’s affinity with literary arachnids – specifically Charlotte A. Cavatica, the eight-legged character from E.B. Whites’ Charlotte’s Web. Be forewarned, this beer will stain your clothes.

Dark almost opaque black color, small beige head. Light aroma of licorice and licorice candy. Medium-bodied, oily mouthfeel. Cough syrup, licorice and alcohol in the reasonably sweet flavor. A bit strange strong stout.

Sample at the brewpub, part of Stout Month. Pours nearly black with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Sticky patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of berries and coffee, plus some malt. Rich, smooth body with flavors of roasted malt, coffee and hops. The finish is roasty with a mild coffee and cocoa aftertaste. Above average overall.

Draft. At my visit I was told it was at 8.8% ABV. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The arom is sweet matly with notes of roasted malt. The flavor is very sweet with notes of chocolate and roasted malt as well as lighter notes of coffee, leading to a dry, sweet, and slightly roasted soy sauce finish.

Draft at the brewpub. Toasted malt aroma. Blackish color with a tannish head. The body is medium; the carbonation is mild. The flavor is toasted malt with a tart character. Some coffee. Finishes not quite dry. Seems a bit different from the common stout herd. There is a touch of chocolate. Alcolhol was not bothersome.

Very dark brown. Aroma shows an overtoasted harsh graininess. Big wonky alcohol and fruitiness on this one...a little paint thinner and pear for fun. Sweetish overall and a slightly fudgey finish.
