AKA Holiday Ale

AKA Holiday Leftover Ale

AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

355ml bottle. Opalescent, orangey golden colour with huge, thick, firm, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Pale malty and citrusy hoppy aroma, hints of lemon, some resin, a touch of almond. Taste is bitter, citrusy hoppy, sweet-ish, minimally biscuity, pale malty, some lemon, pine, resin; lingering, bitter hoppy finish. Oily texture, smooth, soft and silky palate, fine and soft carbonation. Mild and clean, homogeneous, but rather monotonous; kind of softened DIPA - pretty good, but not more.

35,5cl bottle from Viking XPRS. Pours clear golden with a fairly decent, white head. Malty, fruity and hoppy with notes of semi-dried citrus, caramel and hints of pine and herbs. Medium sweet with pleasant hoppy flavours and a nice bitterness. Smooth, balanced and very enjoyable. --- Beer merged from original tick of Sucks on 03 Jan 2020 at 19:22 - Score: 7

Bottle from 2017, provided by Lagunitas. Since this is two years old, and probably has had a chance to let its malts turn, I'm going into this with an open mind. First off, the color is a bright brass, with a white foamy head that leaves behind a decent bit of lacing. The smell has all malts to it, and there is a bit of phenol to it, meaning there is a bit of staleness. But, the phenol goes away when I taste it. I get an amplified beer taste, with some hoppiness there to knock back any sweetness. And I'll note that they don't mention much about the hop varietals in the description. This is described as an American Strong Ale, one of those catchall style names that covers any number of beers, so long as they're not malt liquors. This is indeed not a sipper by any means, and that's mostly from the unheralded hop bitterness. 2020 version. Bottled Sept. 17, sampled Nov 13. Definitely fresher hop nose. Some citrus on the nose over a fluffy off white head. Brassy yellow color with some unfiltered floaty bits. Taste has much more of the PNW hop load, more pine and resin. Not much alcohol apparent here, and the malt barely holds back against the hop burst. Okay, the bottle proclaims this to be an IPA. I guess the extra cereal grains peg this as a strong ale.

Bottle at Antenna America. Golden colour, small off white head. Aroma is hoppy, tropical fruit and skunky. Lots of bitterness. Taste is less harsh, nice fruitiness with slight spicy maltiness, tangerine. Very nice but quite full on.
