A vigorous fermentation is followed by a long maturation – the beer is brewed in February and then released on the unsuspecting public. A densely rich beer with a dark brown head, it has coffee and berry like aromas and a velvet mouth feel. This beer commands respect and deserves to be savoured slowly.

2007 bottle, 3rd LCRBM. Hints of smoke, milk, roasted malt and licorice in the aroma. Sweet flavor with roasted malt, coffee and laurel. Slightly sticky mouthfeel but the alcohol is well hidden. Good!

On tap in El Drapaire Barcelona. Black colour, head does not stay long. Aroma is lots of alcohol, raisin. Light sweetness. Lacks body. What a bloody disaster.

330ml bottle, 2014 vintage. Almost black with no head. Aroma is dark fruits, roast malts, alcohol, aniseed. Taste is dark fruits, liquorice, roast malts, aniseed, slight medicinal, alcohol is very warming and doesn't burn. Rich and full bodied, fine carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. Not bad but too much liquorice/aniseed flavour from this to really enjoy it, can see why people rate it so highly though.

0.33 l bottle from 'Rudat', 2014 vintage, best before December 2016. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, quickly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish, malty and moderately roasty aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and hints of dark ripe fruits. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty taste of dark chocolate, licorice, some coffee, hints of dark ripe fruits and hints of ash, followed by a medium long, rather roasty-bitter, slightly earthy-dry finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Well-balanced and round, tastes maybe a little bit oxidized already.

Bottle from Brewklopedia, Leicester. Very nearly black with a purplish hue. Little ring of beige/cream head. Liquorice, raisins, bourbon, cigarette ash and charcoal in the aroma. Taste is bittersweet, boozy and creamy, with the long luxurious finish bringing butterscotch, salted plum and yeast extract in the aftertaste. Full body with just enough carbonation to give it a bit more zip (as if any were needed). And man, do you feel the ABV. Really special.
