A vigorous fermentation is followed by a long maturation – the beer is brewed in February and then released on the unsuspecting public. A densely rich beer with a dark brown head, it has coffee and berry like aromas and a velvet mouth feel. This beer commands respect and deserves to be savoured slowly.

Bottle at home in London. Vintage 2009. Pours black-brown with a moderate, beige froth head. Some dusty cocoa on the nose, dark chocolate, raisins, other dark fruits. Medium to big sweet flavor, lots of rich, dark fruits, chocolate, charred wood, mild earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with smooth, rounded dark sugars, raisins, dark chocolate, burnt wood, moderate roast. A tasty, fairly well balanced impy stout. (3.9)

Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Black pour with a fast fading tan head. Robust and enticing snout of dark fruits, cake, booze and malts. Flavour had some sweetness with notes of roasted malts, dark fruit and some prominent booze. Certainly well crafted and hard to fault overall, but didn’t knock me off my chair.

2009 bottle. Vinous (port), milk choclaty (in a Oboy kind of way), roasted, slightly spicy, fruity, quite dry in aftertaste. Elegant.

Bottle at home - 18/09/12. 2011 Vintage. Pours a medium black but appears very dark mahogony brown when held to the light with a thin tan head that soon dissipates to form a small pool on top and to the edges which retains to the end. Dark fruits at the fore of the nose, berries, dates, toffee, Christmas cake, chocolate, roasted malts, germaline. Quite a fruity tasting imperial stout, all the berries and dark fruits again backed up by chocolate and roasted malts. Surprisingly thin feel to this beer for 10.5%! Medium bodied but quite wet. A little more carbonation than I’d have cared for from a beer of this style, although it is on the soft side. Alcohol flavour very evident in the finish. Decent enough, but I was a little disappointed and had expected more.

33cl bottle courtesy of and shared with _angst_ Brune foncée, col fin beige.
