Based on the classic Vienna Lager style (though technically an ale), and annoyer of a certain type of beer geek, Vienna Pale is a sweet, malty drinking pint, with plenty of Saaz, Citra and Cascade dry-hopping to keep things interesting.

Tap at six degrees north. Nose is citrus, honey bread, the hops come through a bit weird. Palate is bready orange, citrus, bitter finish. Meh.

Keg at The Royal & Navy Volunteer, Bristol. Pour is hazy golden amber. Muted aroma of clean malts, not much else going on. More clean malts on the taste, light flavours of lemon & citrus. Medium bodied, moderate carb., medium biscuit finish.

Keg at Mother Kelly’s - London. Pours unclear amber with a creamy, white head. The aroma holds toasted biscuits, pine, orange rind. Light sweet flavour with further rindy citrus, lightly toasted grains, piney bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Fi sines with a little piney resin, more grainy and lightly toasted malts, orange peel. Really enjoyable beer.

Keg at the Constitution, Leith. Dark gold/copper, clear with very little head. Aroma of forest floor, caramel malt, berries, cinnamon, vanilla ice cream. Taste is bittersweet, more sweet than. Bitter but there is a lovely spicy hoppy bite in the surprisingly dry finish. A wonderful example of an often unpopular style.

Cask at the Vintage, Leith. It pours clear golden amber with a medium white head. The nose is brown bread, wood, mild spice, leather and florals. The taste is crisp, doughy, floral, spice, breadth malt and light stone fruits with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not a whole lot to it...

Review is a combination of trying on cask at Jake’s Place and from bottle at The Pantry. Clear ruby/golden body with a thin white head that holds well. Light lacing. Clean aroma of straw, pear and red fruits. Flavour of apricot, earth, sweet pale malt and a touch of caramel. Thin body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Straightforward but tasty. A bit sweeter than I was expecting.
