BATCH 18 (blended in October 2014) was distributed as follows:
Type in BATCH
Moscatel 50%
Brandy 17%
Oloroso 16,5%
New Oak High Toast 16,5%
In terms of basis, this Oak Aged Batch 18 is the smaller brother of Batch 17, and as such it has a copper-brown colour and a mixture of muscatel and Quadrupel aromas. In addition to the obvious presence of grapes, one also clearly recognises date and vanilla flavours. This batch has more of a smoky flavour, as newly burnt wood was used. The wood tannins however, are less prominent. As a result, the aromas are softer and creamier, giving the consumer a complex yet highly accessible flavour.
Characteristics of muscatel: fruity: orange blossom, honey, light orange, raisin; flowery: rose, geranium, lily; spicy: tobacco leave, cider, clove.

Bottle. Dark brown color, no head. Delicious aroma of boozy grape, brandy and a little oak. Amazingly rich taste of fruity boozyness, apple brandy, smooth vanilla, oak, raisin and a little caramelised malt. Long full finish. A really good beer, thumbs up to La Trappe.

375 ml. bottle @ home. Procured from ALBO. BBF 10/2039 (wow, having tried some of the first batches recently, I wouldn’t say that). Surprisingly dark red fruits, dark wood, little in the way of head, only in the middle some off-white head. Thick huge vanilla nose, caramel, sweet, vanilla sweet wine, strong red wine, very sweet brandy, lots of sweet oak,…Taste strong vinous with dark grapes, lots of vanilla oak, warming, nice spirit-quality in the back, sweet red grapes, caramel, brown sugar,.. Could be thicker, body wise but heavy barrel use, strong spirit-feel works really nicely. Shockingly better than #17 for me which had the same barrels but different percentages. Heavy spirit / wine quality works wonderfully here.

Bottle @ home. Clear reddish brown color, medium sized tan head. Aroma is sweet, moscatel and oloroso are very present and a touch of wood. Taste also has sweetness and a lot of moscatel and oloroso flavors with again a touch of wood and slightly warming alcohol. Medium body and carbonation. Lovely again though a bit heavy on the sweet side I think.
