The Grottenbier was created by one of the greatest Belgian brewers, Pierre Celis. The aim of Grottenbier is to see what the influence of a constant low temperature, such as in a cave, does to the evolution of a beer taste. In 2002, Pierre sold the beer (name and recipe) to Brouwerij St. Bernardus, where it has been commercialized for the last ten years. When De Kazematten became a possibility, St. Bernardus immediately saw a new home for the Grottenbier. The dream of Pierre became reality. The cooperation with the marl caves of Valkenburg and Kanne will continue in the future as well. In these marl caves you can experience what the low temperature do with the maturisation process of the Grotten Santé. Like the Grottenbier has matured there for the past 10 years, we will do the same with the Grotten Santé.

Pours a murky dark brown with a not too big off-white head that shows good enough retention and some lacing. Aroma is mostly vinous with a slight sour hint, dried/dark fruit notes and sugary sweetness (brown sugar). Overall nicely vivid. Taste is mainly sweet with caramel malts and some sugar, fruity notes (plums, banana) and a slight sourish/vinous note that is much more subdued than what the aroma suggested. Finishes with a touch of herbal/balsamic bitterness but it's overall still a mainly sweet beer. Light to medium bodied with average to high carbonation, maybe a bit empty in body for it's complexity. A typically belgian brown ale and yet a not too standard one. Overall easily drinkable and quite interesting, possibly a tad too sweet for my taste.

Sampled from the tap at Happy Gnome. Pours a clear amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges slowly and laces. Aroma has tart stone fruits, sweet grains and a bit of wood underlying. Flavor has bread as sweet grains with a bit of a tart stone fruit bite and a hint of wood.

I guess I’m a little surprised to see this so lowly rated. Not that I thought it was a world classic or anything, but it seemed pretty good. Brownish color, typically foamy. Aroma features a touch of banana, a little dark fruit, maybe persimmon, just a hint of phenol. Flavor very similar except with a dry cocoa powder element, balanced finish, soft palate. Perhaps a small tartness which seemed off. Otherwise enjoyable, vaguely reminiscent of a dubbel.

12 oz bottle poured to a tulip. A dark copper pour, high carb, with an active fizz head. A rich malt aroma with hints of spice. Flavor is sweet malt up front, a bit of a plastic quality, soft spice, raisin like dark fruit. Slight metallic. Extremely sweet for me, but the spice and dark fruit saves it. A sipper of a Belgian ale for me, but not bad overall.
