Muddy brown colour. Malty aroma. Smell of alcohol is present too. Slight aniseed flavour at first, some softer cocoa flavours come through in the aftertaste. Rich texture, slightly oily.

330ml bottle. Dark red, almost black body with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and herbs. Flavor is slightly burnt malt, coffee, dry fruit and overripe fruit. Complex.

Dark brown colour, off white medium head. Aroma has roasted malts and spices. Flavour has chocolate malts, spices. Very drinkable!

Medium light brown head. Slightly hazy deep red body. Sweet bubblegum, licorice, and candy aroma with alcoholic roasty malt notes. Wild berry and earthy licorice taste. Dryish chocolatey licorice aftertaste is perhaps the strongest taste. Overall there is surprisingly little taste and depth, though. As you drink, the chocolate comes to dominate more and more. Mild, cool mouthfeel. Not bad, but disappointing for such a strong beer. (0.33l bottle, de Gekraakte Kettel, Amsterdam. BBD Aug ’09.)

(33cl bottle) Hazy, ruby colour with a medium-sized, light-beige foamy head. Sweet, berry fruity, slightly yeasty malty nose with a spicy touch. Sweet flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Roasty malty, slightly caramelly taste with a distinctive fruity note of dried berries; moderately sweet and roasty, slightly fruity finish with an obvious alcoholic strength. Pretty warming in winter but it lacks a bit balance.

Bottled. Deep amberty red colour, not much head. Aroma is alcohol, malts, nectar and some mild spices. Flavour is spices, fruits, some hoppyness and a mild sting of alcohol.

Bottle Kerstbierfestival 2007: Poured a brown with a beige head. The aroma was spice and liquorice. The taste seemed coffee and mylasses, with a touch of liquorice. The finish was tingles of alcohol.

33 cL bottle, Kerstbierfestival 2007 in Essen/Belgium. Pours dark brown with a huge light brown/orange head. Lovely yeasty and slight spiced aroma. Flavour is slight chocolate flavoured, malty and with more of that creamy yeast flavour. Medium sweet. Lingers nicely into the finish with the Belgian yeast flavours. Lovely.

Deep mahogany beer; small yellowish rim. Sourish nose with a spicy lining, not unlike resin. Black cardemompeel. Spicy, but outspoken dry taste. Again cardemom, roasted and some chocolate; getting unexpected depths. Very dry, on the verge of astringent. Alcoholwarming and despite the dryness, well-bodied. Ah, Derek, this is a good one. You might be more sceptic yourself, I like it, and to hell with styleindications. Pity about the weak nose.

Bottle. Frothy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Brown colour. Moderate malty and hopy aroma. Slightly metallic but that fades away. Heavy bitter flavor. Strong chocolate notes. Nice long heavy bitter finish. Creamy palate. Great stuff.
