Orval beer is a high fermentation beer. The ageing process adds a fruity note, which strikes a subtle balance between the beer’s full-bodied yet complex flavour and bitterness.

The beer was first brewed in 1931 and owes its unparalleled taste to the quality of the water, the hops and the yeast used. The brewery has selected very aromatic and unique hop varieties, which hark back to the first brewmaster of Orval, who hailed from Bavaria. The beer’s aromas are very pronounced while maintaining the right level of bitterness thanks to the English method of dry hopping.

The various stages of fermentation – combined fermentation with the original yeast and with wild yeast, followed by fermentation in the bottle – mean the beer must age for some time and requires numerous quality controls.

Vintage 2004. (This Trappist Ale from Piotr i Pawel in Blue City Warsaw). Drink in 2005 or 2006. Fajne mocno nagazowane metniste bursztynowe, chmielne i nieco kwaskowe. Bardzo sie wyroznia na tle innych Trapistowskich piw. Chyba jest najbardziej wytrawne. Piwo wnet szczypie w policzki, dosc dziwne to uczucie jakby bylo ostre przyprawione pieprzem z kolendra. W posmaku nieco jest troche zielonej sliwki. Serwowane do kieliszka Leffe w temp. 12 stopni.

Yesterday at the Bruxelles café, Lausanne, loving this beer, a classical for the eternity, simple and tasty, dry malt with a sweet note of sugar, fruity, dry bitterness, floral and aromatic, fresh and boozy, after some Belgians mussels, just perfect.

Bottle. Bottled 01/03/2022, so almost 4 years old. Color: hazy amber, big off-white head. Aroma: Brett funk, some leather, fruity notes of yellow fruit. Taste: Dry-ish, Bretty, some leather, starting more malty and finishing with a combination of malt and floral hop, lightly peppery and yellow fruit hints. Medium body, below average carbonation. Dry mouthfeel at finish. Nice ageing.

Mild smell of sweet malt. Cloudy deep copper colour, very high off-white head. Aroma of malt, raisins, hops, some alcohol. Green apple and herbs in finish. Fizzy carbon. Medium bitter, medium sweet.

Delightful. Another earthy bitter yeastie boy. Just under 2 years old, my preference for Orval. Pic: that is one special head

Bottle, 2024 vintage. Funky yeast aroma with notes of spicy Belgian yeast, lemony citrus, grassy hops, straw and a bit of barnyard. Pours cloudy golden colored with a large off white head that has excellent retention and little lacing. Starts with yeasty funky spicy Belgian yeast and straw flavors as well as having a lovely mouthfeel. Finishes dry but crisp and refreshing with grassy hops and barnyard flavors. Excellent.
