2015 side-by-side rates: Cascade Stout 5.8, 27.5 ibu Dark brown with only slight red-purple highlights under light. Aroma is chocolatey, slight fruitiness, bit of molasses. Light chocolatey character, demerara dark sugars, just a light fruitiness. 4 7 6 3 14

Cascade Export Stout 5.8 Dark brown with only slight red-purple highlights under light. aroma is chocolatey, fudgey, bit if molasses but not as much fruitiness. Chocolatey but arguably sweeter, earthier, has a fuller body. 4 7 7 4 15

2010 rate: @ Southern Barbarian, Shanghai. Very dark brown colour with a thin head. Chewy, rich, fruity, treacly aroma. Chocolatey palate. Fairly full body. Soft and smooth. Moderate sweetness. Complex fudgey brew. Gets a little bit thin at the end. Pretty good beer that blurs the stout/foreign stout line.

Pours dark brown with a head that settles to small and tan. There’s nutty, roasty and chocolate aromas and something kind of unpleasant there too - burnt metal, I suppose. It’s a bit thin but nicely carbonated - a bit hollow-bodied. Slightly chewy mild bitter finish. It’s OK, but I’m again struck by the lack of oomph and ambition from Cascade. [2.7] As Export Stout. Perhaps a little fresher, pleasantly chocolaty aroma with some weedy herbs and chicory. Choc and nuts, bitterness is balancing, some metal. OK. [2.8] And again, colder. Chocolate, some licorice, weeds. Yeah, OK.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thick brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of chocolate, caramel, and Cascade hops. The flavor is sweet matly with primary notes of chocolate. The body is thin. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

37.5 cL bottle, doesn’t seem be easily placed under any of the two other Cascade stouts despite the same ABV. Pours dark brown with a lacing tan head. Malt and chocolate aroma. Flavour is mild roasted. Medium sweet and roasted malt with a nicd chocolate note lingering into the finish. Light roasted and bitter finish.

Draught at Irish Murphy, Ballarat. Black, average beige head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Light-medium bodied with some molasses and somewhat raw mouthfeel. Short grassy finish. The Export stout felt more mature and refined

Bottled (at AIBA 2005). Very black. Tarry licorice aroma. Sweet and rich on coffee. The coffee just lingers on, passing the somewhat syrupy mouthfeel into the finish where it overpowers the bitterness. One dimensional, and perhaps with simplistic malt character, but after 28 hours on airplanes and umpteen beers at the festival I sure do appreciate the coffee in this beer :-)

Dark brown head, pitch black color. I couldn’t figure out the nose at first, but after it warmed up a bit I got sensous milk chocolate, dark fruit and licorice and BBQ sauce. Very light bodied with milk chocolate dancing in the mouth. The finish is a bit watery, but still has some decent hop presence. Decent stuff.

2003 bottle from Mutant (Thanks!). Pours well enough, dark brown with some lighter magenta/red tinges. Clear, not bottle conditioned. Small light tan colored head. Aroma of sweet syrupy caramel, rich toffee and tons of sweet oats. Flavor is very oaty, chewy/syrupy and quite sweet. Like creamy oatmeal with lots of brown sugar. Hops are not terribly apparent, maybe some bitterness on the finish. Not overly complex, though, and it does get a bit sweet. Lots of milk chocolate and caramel. Yeast apparent on the finish as well. Interesting, but I’d like more bitterness and complexity.
