This is one half of a Black and Tan. Not just any Black and Tan, but the one where a hoppy smug and a toasted fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this flipping good Imperial IPA solo).

Bottle (shared by suurjuust, thanks!). Pours amber with beige head. The head stays for some moments. Aroma is caramel, pine, sweetness. Flavor is sweet and bitter, pine, caramel, some citrus. Finish is pine bitter with some alcohol. Overall: good.

Dunkler und sehr süßer Hopfenantrunk. Dabei steht in weiten Teilen das Karamellmalz im Vordergrund, vollmundig, unsüffig. Mir auf Dauer zu süß. 9/10/7/8/8/8

Evil Twin’s renowned DIPA, with egg-white, dense and moussy, frothy, thickly lacing head and clear orangey amber colour with vivid fizz. Refreshing aroma of acacia honey, nettles, fresh orange peel, pine resin, dry white wine, pink grapefruit, whisky, mandarin liqueur, freshly grated ginger, young Parmigiano cheese, chicken soup, a complete florist shop but without the roses (I’m thinking tulips, sunflowers, Shasta daisies...), ripe pear, white pepper. Crisp onset of a brief but vivid, almost exotic and sensual fruitiness, lots of mango and papaja, strawberry and pineapple, relatively soft carbonation, salty ’seaweed’ accent, smooth and supple body, with a lean, nutty and toasted maltiness of enough ’thickness’ to support a hop bitterness showing up early and lasting for a very long time, resinous, subduedly citrussy, spicy and floral at the same time but very salty as well; in all very drying and appetizing, cleverly combined with lingering malt sweetishness and an equally sweetish, very warming, single malt-like alcohol presence; bitter flavour lasts very long which is to be expected from this style, but so does the saltiness on the sides of the tongue, and that bothers me a whole lot more. This has the crispness, boldness and ’abrasiveness’ of any American DIPA, balanced with a sufficient amount of toasted malts and thus remaining elegant and inviting. Made me curious about its Yin counterpart as well. The only thing bothering me a bit in this one is the persisting saltiness, an experience I had in many DIPAs except for the best examples. In this beer there is just too much of it, in my humble opinion.

355 ml bottle (2014 AD). Honey-amber color with a very good and stable white foam. Aroma: strong, hoppy, floral and fruity, citrus and tropical fruits, nectar sweetness. Taste: good hop bitterness, honey, fruit with citrus, resin and white porto. Good!

Bottle from CBB. A great looking vibrant and deep copper pour with a soapy looking head of foam. Fruity sweet aroma mixing hops & sweet malts. I get grapes & honeyed graham biscuits. Very much in that area between Imperial IPA & American Barleywine. Medium bodied with a zesty mouthfeel. The taste is remarkably sweet, fruits, grapes then it gets bitter with grapefruit pith and some pine sap yet it retains a nice amount of residual sweetness while hiding the high ABV barring some warming in your belly. Solid. Ap 4 ar 8 t 8 p 4 o 14

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 14C). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: predominant malty aroma with some caramelisation. mild hop notes with a citric note. APPERANCE: amber color and slightly hazy. medium ivory head with good retention. TASTE: similar to the aroma with a predominant malty sweet flavour. some faint hop flavour exists in the background with a floral character. high bitterness that lingers well beyond a semi-dry finish. PALATE: medium body with medium carbonation. no astringency. OVERALL: an odd imperial IPA, too much balanced towards the malt, and lacking hop presence (aroma and flavour), maybe because it was bottled in 2013.

Orange color with nice white head. Heavy pine hops, caramel, toffee, intense. Taste is pines, caramel, very toasty malt body, nice balance, but both malts and hops are extreme in this one. Heavy warming bitter finish, citrus aftertaste. Nice carbonation and mouthfeel. Good!
