Extra 4 is the latest scion of the notable St. Bernardus family. A refreshing blond beer that is brewed in the classic single style. Every year, our Extra 4 can be enjoyed in spring and summer. Extra 4 shines with the golden hue of pale straw, topped off with a snowy-white collar. As this beer re-ferments in the bottle, it produces a lovely fizz in the glass. EBC 9.

Blonde in colour, some haziness but maybe a bit more clear than usual for a belgian blonde. A quite big, pillowy and quite frothy white head that shows good retention and very nice lacing. Good enough intensity in the aroma, with a malty base of puff pastry and lighter hay, followed by fruity notes (peach, lighter pear and lemonish notes), grassy freshness and perhaps a hint of spiciness (can't detect something specific). Taste notes follow the aroma, a bit of earthiness shows up in finish/aftertaste but the beer feels overall cleaner/more nitid than most belgian blondes. There's a decent amount of sweetness, well balanced by moderate bitterness (with a hint of earthiness to it) and by a hint of refreshing lemonish sourness. Light body, average to high, fizzy carbonation; feels pleasantly lively in the mouth but still very slick and easy. A very good example of the style.

Bottle. Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with notes of pepper, floral notes, clove, citrus and grainy malt. Pours cloudy golden colored with a large white head that has excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with floral notes, grainy malt and spicy Belgian yeast flavors as having a zippy mouthfeel. Finishes dry, crisp and refreshing with notes of citrus, pepper and clove. Quite quaffable and refreshing.

Sample at the roost of all places. Clear gold, streaky white head. Nose has chrysanthemum and dandelion, grist, wheat and some butter. Easy in the mouth, just soft grain and yeast and bread. Light but a nice texture. Lovely and an easy drinker. Can't believe I haven't rated this.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Hazed lemon gold. Huge egg white swede. Looks like a meringue. Doesn’t smell unlike meringue either. Lemon rind. Sweet bready brioche like malts. Lovely ripe banana-esque yeasty notes. Taste has some bready sweetness and a touch of citrus bitterness. Foamy and soft throughout. Nice nip of bitterness to finish. Lovely.

A 330ml bottle brought from the brewery. A beautifully made Belgium pale ale with good level of hops & bitterness. Drank at home as different bottle of beer in my home No. 1277.

Bottle. This is a really nice beer. Cloudy light gold. Aroma is of a nice spicy Belgian ale. The taste is mildly spicy with a very pleasant after taste. A really great out-on-the-boat on a hot summer day brew.
