(Cask at Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London, 25 Nov 2015) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, chocolate, caramel and hints of smoke. Malty, roasted taste with caramel, chocolate, smoke, a touch of bacon and a balanced roasty bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Smoke character is quite balanced. A bit odd, but quite nice.

Draught at the tank room. Medium caramel brown coloured pour with a lasting loose light tan head. Aroma is light phenolic smoke, TCP, nutty brown malts, light brown sugars. Flavour is composed of nutty grains, nice smoked malt, little peat malt. Slightly medicinal. Palate is medium light, highish carbonation. OK smoked.

Draught at the Howling Hops Tank joint. It pours slightly hazy deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, smoked meat, sweet roast, slight stickiness and light caramel. The taste is smooth, bitter-sweet, earthy roast, smooth smoke, smoked ham, coffee, light spice and dull cocoa with a short dryish finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Decent enough.

By cask at the Cock Tavern, one-third pint. Opaque black coloured body with one big patch at the surface. Wood, dark malts and dark fruits on the nose. Mocha chocolate flavours, subdued smoked malts. Ends with the bitterness of red orange shells. Nice and tasty (Hackney, London 13.07.2014).

Bottle. A lightly hazy one, dark chestnut colored and topped by a dense, light beige head leaving some lacings. The aroma is quite hoppy, with some roasted hints and coffee. It’s full-bodied and quite carbonated in the mouth, semi-dry and with flavors of pine cones, roasted malts and coffee. Lasting finish, dry and quite roasted. A nice one, but I’m not impressed. 131231
