A timeless classic. We have been brewing Ottakringer Helles ever since the brewery was established. It has been in a constant state of change and has developed its taste with time: The best hops and malt, and mild spring water from our in-house brewery well provide an even balance between a light malt aroma with fruity notes and pleasant bitterness. The straw colour and fresh yeast aroma are trademarks of this beer.

Bottle at the hotel in Vienna. Pours pale yellow with a weak, fading white foam head. Sweet and doughy bread aroma. Lightly sweet flavour with mild dough, semi-crisp, slight vegetal notes. Light bodied with average carbonation. Mild crispness in the finish, some dough, wet hay. Drinkable but nothing special.

Mรผnchener Helles by Ottakringer, a 19th-century brewery apparently still operating independently in Ottakring, west of Vienna. Many thanks to Jarno for the can! Thick and frothy, irregularly cobweb-lacing, snow white, pillowy and stable head on a crystal clear, (very) pale 'metallic' straw blonde beer with vaguely greenish tinge and very active sparkling, sustaining the head. Aroma of white bread dough, freshly cut grass, damp straw, plaster, some clear 'can' iron, wet white paper, vague 'generic' flowery note and - warming up - even faint hints of halfripe banana and flour. Neutral onset, moderately sharp carbonation adding minerally effects to a sourish graininess, underlying a sweeter, cereally, slightly white-bready malt flavour, rounded and slender; there is a faint metallic touch at the sides, but much more subtle than I was expecting and not interfering with the display of the malts. The finish adds a thin but structurally very important floral hop bitter note, with meadowy-grassy and field-flower-like associations; this refined bitterness lingers in the end, but the sourish-and-sweetish cerealliness remains the dominant flavour. Typical Helles in all respects, a bit on the thin and grainy side perhaps and in that sense certainly not the best one I had in this underexposed but very traditional lager style, but still 'true to style' enough to remain enjoyable, if pale lagers are your thing. Deserves a (somewhat) higher score on this site, in my opinion.

Can picked up from MPREIS, Leutasch, Austria and consumed at home Sunday 2nd January 2022, listening to Working Mens Club self titled debut album, just cooked Pumpkin,Sage, and Italian Sausage Lasagna. Pours gold, good clarity with a white head, looks great. Soft moutheel, a little cereal, maltiness, it's ok, in fact far, far better than expected.
