Pours dark cloudy brown with very little white foam head. The nose shows a lot of sweet malts and fruity yeast. For an American-style IPA, it shows a lot more similarity to an English one. Very full bodied with a big sharp hoppy bitterness typical of an American IPA. A weak malt backbone supports the beer as it’s mostly dominated by the hops. I guess it is an American IPA after all.

12oz bottle, enjoyed from the mikkeller calendar @ 45F in stemware. color is a dark amber, minimal head. Nose is Simcoe and pine cones. Taste is nice. a lot of crystal malt, very sweet at the start and middle. resinous bitterness. not pushing any boundaries for complexity or mouthfeel. decent IPA

Bottle from the LCBO. Murky deep amber with a large frothy tan head. that fades slowly and leaves good lace. Nose is lots of pine with honey and light toffee. Big pine bitterness throughout with a good caramel malt backing and notes of lemon and grass. Medium slick mouth with average carbonation and a long dry bitter finish. Excellent

Gold aside, this lovely slightly cloudy amber-coloured beer with a finger of dense tan head is exceptionally good looking. And that head isn’t going anywhere. The green steps up with a really nice hoppy nose of resin and pine. The taste too is dominated by, not overwhelmed, by hops. Bitterness, perfume, a little resin, supported by a malt back that adds a little caramel sweetness. The aftertaste is bitter hops, and a little perfume. (I’m starting to wonder if it’s me with all this bitter aftertaste. That’s three in a row, all on different days.) I like it, and my drinking buddies will attest that I’m getting tired of all the damn IPA’s out there on the market. Good on ya’ Mikkeller.

(330mL bottle from the LCBO, 4mo old) Pours a clear dark reddish copper with a midsize frothy medium tan head that lingers well with loads of lace. Aroma somewhat faded due to age, caramel crystal malt comes through the hops more than it should but the latter still quite noticeable: pineapple, orange peel/pith, muddled mangoish tropical fruit. Palate again hints at something better if fresher but still quite decent. Sweet orange, peach, tropical fruit cocktail with hints of mango, honey and light caramel from the malts that become quite prominent in the middle. A drying, astringent but quite moderate bitterness on the finish lends a tea-like quality and quashes much of the malt character and prevents it from being cloying, though a bit of graininess does linger in the aftertaste. Moderate, slightly oily mouthfeel with soft carb. Lots of malt character in this IPA but the orange/tropical character of Amarillo seems to come through well. I just think it would benefit from being fresher, no thanks to the LCBO for letting stuff linger in the lab/warehouse while the hops fade.
