Hertog Jan Karakter is a true Dutch ale, made from the special Hertog Jan malts. Hertog Jan malts, a carefully selected prestige malt, consists of four different malts. This gives the beer a fruity taste with adult hits of bitter. Besides this, Hertog Jan Karakter has the full and warm color of copper.

Bottle, bb 12/2016. Clear, medium amber with a foamy, tan head. Sweetish-malty aroma of nuts, caramel and honey. Sweetish-malty taste of nuts, caramel and honey. Short, slightly bitter finish. Thin to medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay.

Bruin bier met schuim. Smaak is licht zoet en licht rokerig met caramel en koffie. Erg goed bier, smaak blijft redelijk lang hangen.

7/5/2022: Not nearly as bad as I recalled. Fairly malty, some random belgianyness, little bit of dried fruit, quite sweet. Very macro, but drinkable for sure. Just a tad too easy and boring for me, needs to be richer.

Amber color with a beige head. Light roasted malt, caramel and light fruity nose. Light sweet and roasted flavor with a well balanced bitterness. Unusual mild and easy drinkable strong ale.

One of two beers that made up the "Dilemma of Hertog Jan" and the one that won the cleverly marketed battle. Yellowish white, sticky head, warm deep copper colour, clear. Complex malt aroma, toasted bread, hazelnuts, caramel, banana, apple, liquorice, flowery hops, leather. Fruity onset with a strange kind of saltiness, like ’drop’, nutty and caramelly malt base, bit of roasted bitterness in the finish, even a bit smoky, dry finish. Though an interesting brew, I have the impression they tried to blend different styles together, and did not quite find the right balance.

300 ml bottle from Super Food in Palm Beach, Aruba. Dark amber orange color small bubbly white head disappears quickly. Caramel malt nose has notes of earthy yeast and baked bread. Sweet and tangy with notes of nuts and brown sugar. Chewy mouthfeel with notes of dark fruit in mid taste. Finish is dry and slightly bitter.

Amber. Off-white head and lacing. Fruity aroma with candy sugar, berries and hops. More berries in taste, but also caramel. Metallic aftertaste. A bit unfresh.
