In Texels Donkerd I.P.A. wordt hop vers verwerkt tijdens het brouwproces. Dit geeft een fruitige geur en een smaak die doet denken aan grapefruit, ananas en mango. Gebrande mout zorgt voor de donkere kleur en smaaktonen van koffie en karamel. De moutbitterheid is een mooie aanvulling op de voor een I.P.A. kenmerkende hopbitterheid.

Aroma of fruits, malt, some grapefruit, some coffee, hops. Flavour is light to moderate sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Body and mouthfeel impress. As Black IPA’s go this one is a bit restrained. Still, it goes a long way to decrease the conservative, almost stuffy character of the Texelse Brouwerij.

300ml bottle. Clear, darkest brown colour with ruby glimmer and huge, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Roasty dark malty and piney, herbal hoppy aroma, a fruity touch of plum and cherry. Taste is slightly sweet, roasty dark malty, minimally chocolately, piney and resinous hoppy, fruity overtones with hints of plum and red currant. Quite Porter-ish - seems to have taken its starting point not in the IPA realm traveling to the dark malt mountains becoming black afterwards, but rather to be of Porter nativity with subsequent hoppy christening.

Huge, amberish tinted irregular head, stable, over cola-coloured beer. Faint sweetish, caramelly nose, and fainter fruity hops; some spiciness as nutmeg. Huge head seriously hampers the perception. Dry, aromatic hops, faint caramel, sweet exotic fruit, rosewater, coloured malts. But all very held-back. Quite slick; medium bodied, not much going on in the aftertaste. Compared to most black IPA’s, this one is in serious need of a kick in the back to beef it up a bit.

Bottle on the train to Borefts, day 2, 26/09/15. Dark mahogany brown topped with a decent beige cap of bubbles that retains well. Nose is light cocoa powder, earthy hop, dark fruit, spice, red berry linger. Taste comprises a hint of soap, light pine, cocoa, toffee, earthy hops, more red berry. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Mediocre CDA, ticks the style boxes, not one I’d revisit.
