Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

Bottle. Light berry malt aroma. Golden yellow color with decent head. Very light flavor of sweet malt - light hops finish. / Re-rate (3-18-16) Butter, light berry, and caramel malt. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet buttery caramel malt and light hay flavor. Okay body. I guess a bit better - diacetyls dominant but not overpowering. Was better in 1995.

Very light amber color with a thin white head. Sweet malt flavor with slight hints of hops. Very thin flavor with barely any bitterness.

@Milly’s Tavern in NH-on tap-pours a white head. Clear amber color. Aroma is malt. Taste is malt and hops, nicely balanced. Mild carbonation.

Bottled. Amber colour, not much head. Weak vegetable nose. Hoppy fruity flavour. Not special in anyway.

Amber beer with a disappointing head. Flavor and aroma are better than the macros, but this is just within the threshold of craft beers. It’s wide availability may be one of it’s biggest strengths.

I am not a big fan of this company.This was just another in a long line of mediocre beers from them. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a caramel color with a large yellow-white head. There was a light hoppy aroma but not much else on the scent. The flavor is sweet, hoppy and some light malt and a hint of lemon and pepper. A decent but not noteworthy beer.

Pours a nice orange color with a big white head. Has a nice malty aroma and the flavor is very malty with touch of hops in there. Nice and dry and bitter. Prob not the best of this kind out there but very servicable.

Bottle Pours a medium copper with a nice foamy white head, leaving a little sticky lacing. Aroma is malty and roasted grain with very little hops. Taset is roasted grain and malt also, no surprises, a little woody. The alcohol comes through a bit and the lingering finish is slightly bitter. Quite mild in all. Finish is clean with little to remind you of what you jst had. Nothing to really like or dislike.

Hazy amber orange beer with a light malty aroma with faint hops and light citrus. Good malt taste, not too sweet, with a mild bitterness in aftertaste, quite sustained. Medium bodied with a good balance of hops and malts. I would not qualify this as a ESB though.

Deep amber in color, no head, but the color is awfully nice. Very metallic smell... smells like a bowl of water that pennies have been soaking in (ok, strange example, as why would one be soaking pennies in a bowl?) OK taste... very average for an esb- I've had much better. This one is almost flavorless. Good mouthfeel, but only average drinkability- and one I'm not likely to have again.
