STEENBRUGGE Dubbel Bruin abbey beer is a brown beer with a straightforward, malty-caramel character and a fruity, lightly smoked yeast aroma combined with the subtle Bruges “gruut” blend of herbs and spices, with an emphasis on cinnamon.

750 ml bottle into chalice, best before 12/26/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, pear, fig, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, toast, brown bread, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast esters and moderate candi sugar//bread/caramel malts; with good strength. Taste of raisin, plum, pear, fig, apple, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, toast, brown bread, clove, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, fig, apple, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, clove, toast, brown bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity of fruity/earthy yeast ester and moderate caramel/bready/candi sugar malt flavors; with a solid malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this was a nice Dubbel style. Good complexity of fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors with a fair amount of caramel/bready/candi sugar malts; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. Could have used some more maltiness to balance the yeast fruitiness, but was nicely enjoyable otherwise.

Hazy almost opaque red brown colour, small off-white head, disappears quick, thin rim remains. Sweet malty aroma, some acidity, bread, syrup, plum, apricot, ginger, yeast, herbs. Taste medium sweet, slightly bitter, wee bit of sourness, spicy. Medium to full body, bit watery texture, rather sharp mouthfeel, peppery. Subdued sweetbitter finish, metallic, spicy.

750ml bottle shared by Anndiesel. Dulled but glowing orange-red body. Soapy off-white to beige head. Sweet, mellow, doughy body. It isn’t the richest Dubbel out there, and I like it for that. No overboard candi sugar or viscously overly rich malt tones. Smooth and balanced, quite drinkable. Some chestnut, toffee, raisin, dark fruit tones, maybe a pinch of amber malt. A very pleasant Belgian beer, one not easily replicated.

(Keg at Belge, 20131229) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had caramel, Belgian style yeast and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, caramel, toasted malts, sweetnesss and bitterness. Afteraste was malty and bitter. Not so good dubbel: harsh and too sweet.

330ml bottle from Carrefour Brugge - Ruby to dark amber body, fluffy beige head. Aroma is spicy and malty. Medium body with frothy creamy carbonation. Flavour is dark malt with dark cake fruit. Not bad at all.

Solidne piwo z ciekawym posmakiem jakby dzikiego ale lub winiaku. Kwaskowosc lekka z nuta slodyczy ktora na finiszu dominuje jednak. Ciemno brazowo-machoniowy kolor ladnie prezentuje sie wraz z trwala piana w kieliszku.

Bottle, 10C. Brown with a beige head. Aroma of nuts, toast, herbs. Taste is fruitier than suggested by the aroma with raisins, brown sugar, toast. Not that sweet though. Herbal, moderately bitter and quite dry finish with some citrus. Pleasant and refreshing.
