330ml bottle. Pours dull gold with a large, frothy head. Aroma is corn and veg, a little rubber. Taste has light straw to start. Some corn on the finish and a little rubbery alcohol on the finish.

Heller Bock from another Italian craft brewery, bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren, as Poretti Bock Chiara. Moussy, ’membranous’ lacing, off-white head with good edge retention but quickly thinning and breaking in the middle, clear warm ’old gold’ colour with quite lively fizz. Aroma of clear, cooked pasteurization, damp kitchen towel, wet paper, soggy chicken corn, lightly toasted white bread, dry hay, iron, dried grass, hints of honey, apricot peel and very dry lime zest - no vivid fruitiness so clearly a lager. Same story in the mouth: sweetish onset but only lightly so, otherwise fairly neutral, not much going on, minerally, bit honeyish, some malt fruitiness continuing into the middle, sweet and caramelly but lightly so, with a vague toasted bitterish edge but even then the sweetish ’carameliness’ persists; bit resinous but otherwise light in mouthfeel. Finish adds a wee bit of grassy and floral hops which provide a touch of bitterishness for balance; minerally accents linger along with the slightly hopped malt sweetishness going down the throat. Feels like some pale Pilsener-derived lager as is the case with some of the ’original’ German Maibocks, but in comparison with those, lacking in malt sweetness and rotundity. Poor and thin example of the style - clearly an interpretation made by a large industrial brewery (Carslberg, that is, in this case). Not undrinkable, but that is about the only positive message I can convey. Simple, not understanding its own style all too well, feeling industrial and clearly pasteurized - this is a sharp contrast against the countless Italian craft breweries who do make the effort to try and produce important beers. Does not invite me to try the dark (’dunkler Bock’) version at all.

33cl bottle from Marks & Spencer, Camberley. An amber pour with a billowing white head; grainy aroma with a trace of honey; sweet honeyed taste, with an intense grainy bitterness, that’s not entirely pleasant; then a sweet bock-like finish with lingering honey. Interesting!

Bottle, 0.33l. Pours clear golden color with medium frothy white head and sparkling appearance. Aroma is grainy, vegetably, honeyish, dusty and a bit skunky. Taste starts moderate sweet malty with bready and caramel note, following is vegetably and grainy with strange medicinal mouthfeel, while finish is mild bitter. Light to medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Pooretti :)
