Typical Flemish red-brown beer with a pleasant balance between complex fruitiness and refreshing acidity. This gem of brewing art owes its recognition as an "acknowledged local product" to the age-old production process.
Beer from high mixed fermentation, carefully matured for 24 months on oak wood. Basic ingredients: barley malt, caramel malt, annual Poperinge hops and pure water. The spontaneous but extremely complex microbiology inside the oak barrels results in an extremely soft, sour beer, ready to be fortified with a young, high-fermented beer.

Tap at Cafe Manuscript, Oostende. Aroma is gentle flanders red. Deep red colour with healthy fizz. Interesting and complex flavour that blends so many belgian styles, mostly kriek and goldens pales. Easy drinking with its slight sweet and sourness. Nothing mind blowing though and certainly below other reds I've had.

Clear light brown, with reddish hints if seen through light, a bit more hazy on second pour. Small head soon recedes to a thin layer. Nice lacing though. Slightly subdued but nice aroma shows a sweet base of caramel malt, red fruit notes, light vinegar sourness and woody/oaky hints with possibly the slightest bit of oxidation. Taste follows the aroma, now much more lively, with excellent definition and good complexity. Sweetness and sourness in good balance with none standing out in an overall highly drinkable version of the style. Balanced finish too, with a light bit of earthiness. Medium bodied with low to medium, fine carbonation. The overall result is a smooth but still somewhat creamy mouthfeel that i really enjoyed. A well made oud bruin.

On tap @Luppolo Station (Rome). Miele di castagno, intensa, schiuma avorio media. Al basso frutta rossa, note vinose e balsamiche, leggero sentore di acidi gastrici, legno. In bocca è dolce all'attacco, caramello e frutta rossa, chiusura moderatamente acida. Corpo medio, carbonazione media. Molto buona!

Bottle: caramel, nutmeg, oak and cherry in the aroma. Oak, cookie-caramel and a very slight sourness in the flavor. Tastes OK but in no way comparable to Rodenbach Grand Cru. Lacks power, complexity, sourness and character. ( 6 3 7 3 13 = 3.2) Tap, Café Morshuis Albergen. Woody, somewhat dusty aroma with some fruit in the background. Upcoming light fruity sourness (cherries, grapes) challenged by some caramel, wood and a slight bitterness. Could use a bit more authenticity, but has a tremendous drinkability. (7 3 8 4 14 = 3.6)

$4.85 bottle, WW. Best by August 2022, so plenty of time... Copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma is sour stone fruit. Flavor is tart peach, caramel, sugar, slight tart berry. Sweet for a sour.
