Ale with Peppers added & Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Although many find only pain in this beer, chile pepper connoisseurs, daredevils and masochists proclaim it a fine, intense and enlightening experience. Never intended for the timid, Punishment is the capsaicin-throttled spawn of the beer behemoth Double Bastard Ale. Months of aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels intensify this beast of a beer’s already massive flavors, while the unceremonious addition of chile peppers (jalapeno, serrano, Fresno and more) morphs it into a truly punishing beer.

Punishment was first concocted in 2010, when Greg Koch annihilated a barrel-aged batch of Double Bastard Ale by adding his estate-grown chile peppers. In this year’s brew, the flavors of Double Bastard Ale have been further enhanced by the bourbon barrel aging. The addition of chile peppers to the beer adds lingering flavors in the finish of subtle tropical fruit and some layers of heat that meld with the toffee, caramel malt and hop flavors.

As hot a tamale as advertised in their always provocative promotional material. Characterized as “a brave beer” by beer enthusiasts I shared this with, it’s hard to imagine how many peppers go into creating this searing sipper. On top of the heat, there are delicious caramel malts, bourbon from the barrelling and enough hops to support the taste. Nice one to share and I wish I had more.

Bottle pour shared by Tcon. Thanks! Can't believe the way this brew has held up the last 9 years. I have to imagine it has gotten hotter. Cause damn, this beer is hot! Just how I like my favorite style. Pours a dark ruby red, almost no head that sticks around. Aroma gives off hints of caramel, citrus hints, and earthy, bold peppers. Flavor is an instant heat, with subtle notes of Bourbon, oak, and sweet malt that tries to hide underneath. Long lingering chili heat. Speaking to a small crowd here, but this is one fantastic brew if you love the style like myself. Wow.

Too far into the capsaicin madness for me. General Double Bastard bitter, oozy thickness is prominent, as is an oaky bitter back end, but it all gets blown away by the insane pepper heat. Vegetal finish only adds to the pepper overload, as does the nose, which comes off like a bowl of sliced serranos. As most criminals, I prefer the Crime to the Punishment.

Sampled at THT June. Hazy amber with light beige head. Sweet sugary malts, bourbon, light booze, caramel, red berries, raspberries, yoghurt, massive chili heat but no nice chili aroma. Quite sweet, medium bitter. Full bodied, strong chili heat. Not too interesting aroma and indeed slightly punishing heat. Meh.

Bottle, 500 ml at Greg Koch meet & greet at Fakin. Shared with others. Hazy dark orange with off-white head. Malty, caramel, some fruit notes, bourbon, toasted, nice bitter finish, medium chili. Smooth texture. Very nice, chili is well integrated and underlying beer makes a good base. Medium bodied.
