Although many find only pain in this beer, chile pepper connoisseurs, daredevils and masochists proclaim it a fine, intense and enlightening experience. Never intended for the timid, Punishment is the capsaicin-throttled spawn of the beer behemoth Double Bastard Ale. Months of aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels intensify this beast of a beer’s already massive flavors, while the unceremonious addition of chile peppers (jalapeno, serrano, Fresno and more) morphs it into a truly punishing beer.
Punishment was first concocted in 2010, when Greg Koch annihilated a barrel-aged batch of Double Bastard Ale by adding his estate-grown chile peppers. In this year’s brew, the flavors of Double Bastard Ale have been further enhanced by the bourbon barrel aging. The addition of chile peppers to the beer adds lingering flavors in the finish of subtle tropical fruit and some layers of heat that meld with the toffee, caramel malt and hop flavors.

Bottle, with ogi, Hrabren, JFK & kajser. I Peh! Brown-amber, off white head. So... Ground red hot pepper, paprika! Some maltiness underneath. Taste... Full maltiness with more ground hot red pepper powder, mild citric touches, might be from the chili. Solid head, quite nice!

A bottle shared among Marko, Kaiser and Ogi. Murky ruby red, small off-white head. Spicy aromas, light caramel, malts, fruit. Light paprika! Very spicy. Hungarian or Slavonska paprika. Nice spices. Not too overwhelming. Not punishing. The guys are used to it. You can't fool us.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2015 vintage bottling. Had to use a wine key to remove the cork as usual. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy dark ruby red, light copper/brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, chile/jalapeno peppers, pepper skins, raisin, orange, citrus peel, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of molasses, smoke, and herbal/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, peppers, bourbon barrels, and light citrus/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, chile/jalapeno peppers, pepper skins, raisin, orange, citrus peel, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of molasses, smoke, and herbal/toast/oaky earthiness. Light-moderate pepper spiciness, and light pine/citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, chile/jalapeno peppers, pepper skins, raisin, orange, citrus peel, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, light molasses/smoke, and herbal/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, peppers, bourbon barrels, and light citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/spiciness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering pepper spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, fairly sticky, and lightly slick/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Light-moderate increasing pepper heat after the finish, but not too overwhelming. Not much alcohol warmth or barrel booze for 12%. Overall this is an excellent barrel aged spiced American strong ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, peppers, bourbon barrels, and light citrus/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV; despite the increasingly spicy/heated pepper finish. Not too overly spicy from the sizable malt backbone. Age probably mellowed it out though. Nicely balanced between the base beer, bourbon barrels, and mix of pepper varieties. Wish I could have tried it fresh, to get more hop character; but still very enjoyable all around. I have a high tolerance for heat though, so definitely not for everyone.

Bottle at LKS – thanks to filth peddler Dan. It pours lightly hazy amber with a thick foamy white head. The aroma is sweet and spicy, bready, green veg, chilli spice, peppery, but also some tangy fruits and wood. The taste is initially crisp, dry, then it is sweet and spicy, warming chilli throughout, green veg, peppery, toasty sugars, some stone fruit, marmalade and some oaky bourbon. Finish is lingering chilli spice. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. I honestly though this was gonna be way hotter given the name. Interesting that’s for sure. Not bad for a chilli beer.

Bottle shared in London - because of DNiel. Pours unclear copper with a foamy, yellowish foam head. Lightly toasted pepper in the nose. Medium sweet flavour with more intense chili character, so,e toasted malts, toffee, dried berries. Medium to full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Hot finish, lots of lingering chili burn, green pepper, leathery berries, a little toffee. Interesting, but just a bit too hot.

Bodney Towers Bottleshare. Thanks to Dan. Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Soft malts, tangy caramel and toffee. Skunk and a lot of fierce chilli. Soft dry spicy finish. Way over spiced but not awful.

Bottle split at Bodney Mansions, thanks to Danny, 18/01/18. Golden amber with a decent off white cap. Nose is tofee, green pepper, fruit loaf, spice, brown bread, chilli, bourbon tickle. Taste comprises a big green chilli kick, hop bite, spice, mango flash, bitter citrics. Medium bodied plus, fine carbonation, warming chilli heat in the close. Fun chilli beer but couldn't handle too much of this.
