Gageleer Sour White - No Hops

Sour White - No Hops

Gageleer in Oud-Turnhout, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪

  Wheat Ale Regular

ABV: 4.3% IBU: - Ticks: 12
Is a wheat-like beer. Although high fermentation it has a low alcohol percentage for a Belgian of 4,3%. Bog Myrtle (sweet gale, Myrica Gale in Latin) is used in stead of hops for adjusting taste and conserving the beer. This beer is very refreshing and the perfect thirst quencher on a summer’s day. One can not compare this white beer to other typical Belgian whites. Lactic fermentation gives it a surprising taste mélange of sourish, fruity and herbal experiences. There are no other herbs used besides Bog Myrtle. You go back to a true medieval tasting experience, the taste of beer before hops were introduced in the low countries hundreds of years ago.

27/VIII/23 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home, BB: 3/II/23 (2023-507)

Clear orange blond beer, big creamy white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: very fruity, passion fruit, a bit lemony, a bit malty, yeasty, lactobacillus. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sourish start, pretty fruity, passion fruits, peaches, some banana, kiwi, a little bitter. Aftertaste: nice acidity, fruity, passion fruit, juicy, refreshing, nice one, I like it!

Thanks Jef! Easy to drink, slightly sour with herbal parts. Easy to drink, a bit spiced with a nice sour fruity ending.

Medium, slighly yellowish dense head over hazy dark-orange beer, lace. Very spicy nose, peppery - the myrica - cypress, aromatic. Sour, very lemony, lemonbalm, lime. Less spicy, emphasis on the acidity. Sour oranges. Refreshing, light, slight acidbite. Good carbonation. Surprising beer, but the discrepancy between the nose and the flavour irks me. Still, I find it better than the original Gageleer.

Hazy pale blond with thin wispy head. Aroma and flavour are floral and herbal with a fresh citric tartness. Lemon balm.

Fles gekregen van Bram, thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een helder goudgeel bier met een medium witte schuimkraag. Het aroma is graanig en zuur. De smaak is zurig en citrus achtig.

Bottle at Water en Brood. Bitter hazy light yellow with bright white head. Sour lemon, soft wheat, light herbs, soft gavel but less then in the regular Gageleer. Almost medium sour, light sweet and bitter. Almost medium bodied. Decent.

T: sour fruity, lemon, herbal, dry on the palate, very refreshing bit puckering, light body and soft carbonation, not bad at all yet not for the style, 33cl bottle from Dolma Magasin Bio in Brussels.
