Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Super hazy ruby coloured body with a thinnish off-white head. Nice looking! Aroma of strong sweetness, a lot of fruit, malt, caramel and a good hoppy scent. Nice oaky flavour with vanilla noticeable up front with tons of hops and a load of sugar - a lot of absolutely everything. A huge beer, no matter how you look at it! Overall, almost too much, but nothing horribly wrong with it. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors on 23-June-2005 at Jon(R888710)’s.

250ml on tap at Den Tatoverede Enke. Cloudy mahogany body under a loose, tan head. Flowery smell with notes of biscuit. Prominent taste of dry pine and grapefruit giving way to notes of caramel malts. Hoppy dryness beneath resulting in an increasingly and prolonged bitter ending. Full bodied and a bit heavy to drink (Thanks to Guri from VG for the treat, Copenhagen 16.09.2008).

Bottle at EBF copenhagen 2008 ... Red brown ... big sweet barley wine nose ... juicy pine ... quite a lot of bitterness ... loads of pine hop and just a bit rough.

Draught at Plan B, Copenhagen. Clear chestnute, thin beige head. Wow, tha’s a big hit of hop and then really good malty fruity body. Big, big, just a big hit of everything. Not too sweet, not too syrupy, massive cascade, centennial hops. Heat on finish. Lovely.

22 oz bottle, aged about a year. Pours a dark ruby color with a small thin white head. Aroma is sweet caramel, malts, dried fruits. The flavor is caramel, dark fruits, moderate citrus, and a smooth alcohol taste. It’s a shame that I can’t find any more Great Divide beers here anymore. Come back soon, please!

RB US #900: From tap at Plan B. Pours clear and hazzlenut golden brown with a creamy light tan head. Solid hoppy and mild caramel malty aroma. Dense and towards liqourice spiced and hoppy finish. Sweet and dense caramel malty with a solid hops flavour and distinct bitterness into the finish. Dry and dense malty and fruity lingering into the far finish. Slight wooden too.

RBESG08 grand tasting Opaque red-brown body... bit of a gusher. Off white beige persistent head. Malty, heavy fruity nose... dusty and I didn’t like it much. Slightly sticky maltiness, American hops giving a good bitterness. Dusty, herbal, some pine, gummi bears, sweet. Tasty but not all that complicated.

(Re-rate, draught at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-01-27) Dark brown and hazy. Lightly tan coloured medium sized long lastin head. Strong grassy and hoppy aroma. Full bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation and warming alcohol. Hops, grass, bitterness, malts and light sweetnes in taste. Bitter aftertaste. Old rating: 8-4-8-4-15

Pours dark copper with light tan head. Aromas of malts and caramel. Flavor is sweet and malty and finishes with a nice hoppy bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden for over 10%. Full body with minimal carbonation and a creamy, syrupy mouthfeel. This is a very good barley wine. I will definately have this again.
