Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Bottle courtesy of Daalamar: Poured a burgundy color ale with a small off-white foamy head with average retention. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with some noticeable bitter hops. Taste is a well enough balanced mix between sweet caramel malt and bitter hops. Body is above average but could have been more full and alcohol was well hidden which is great. Overall, this was quite enjoyable and would love to have more in order to aged some of it.

22oz bomber; Nose of caramel, plum fruitness, and a little hop note; color is cherry-amber with a small beige head; flavor of caramel with fruit, then the hops hit with a good deal of bitterness that slowly trails into an alcohol burn finish!

Bottled. Copper-red, almost clear, and with a dense, beige head. Lots of sweetness in the aroma, with hop-aromas like pine and resin, fruityness and some beef-stock. It tastes very bitter, fruity and hoppy, with stock and alcohol. Full bodied and sweet, a bit sticky. A big American barley wine. (060801)

[Bottle] Dark redish amber with a firm head. Dried fruits, orange peels and hops on the nose. Thick and sweet mouth feel. Flavour is lots of malt, toffee and more dried fruits followed by a long intense bitterness. The taste of alcohol is nowhere to be found. Not for the faint hearted.

Pours with light tan which is decent for a barleywine. Dark brown murky body. Rasins, honey and brown sugar in the aroma. Some sweetness in the flavor hiding behind a solid wall of moderate bitterness. Smooth and a touch of alcohol.

Pours deep burgundy into a snifter with slight head that skims the surface. Sweet earth and fermented fruit aromas. Sweet upfront, full, oily and syrupy with a lasting bitter hop grapefruit finish.
