Death Hoppy Black Ale

A soft malty nose on a rich brown body with a thin off-white head. Overall, this is a mild but enjoyable version of the black IPA. Evenly balanced roasted malt and hops on a medium to thin texture. Well constructed.

Bottle: Poured a dark black brown with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, licorice, hoppy, cascades. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, hoppy, licorice.

Deep very dark brown coloured body with a thick, super dense and very lively light brown head, about seven centimetres tall. Aroma of hop pellets, over-yeastie and sugared wort and a dose of toffee and earth from the roasted malt product in the bill. Medium-bodied; Soapy and almost artificial hop bite with a big dose of yeast and astringent hop pellets coupled with some grain and lighter toffee and earthy characteristics near the end. Aftertaste is deep and robust with the alcohol and hops coming through almost immediately, but also showing the fake and pellet side of things instead of full hops themselves. Overall, a decently flavoured, but incredibly soapy and funky Black IPA that borders on the Imperial side of things from a taste-perspective, but not form an alcohol or body side of things, still good to try and well worth trying to find if you like Roastier IPAs! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Corner Store (Bait and Tackle) in West Palm Beach, Florida) on 26-December-2017 for US$4,49 sampled at my hotel room here in Disney World [Dolphin] on 28-December-2017.

Bottle. Pours clear reddish brown with small foamy beige head, faint citrus aroma, medium carbonation, bitter caramel/hops taste, thin body, long bitter finish. Hoppy and bitter.

12oz bottle. Poured a pretty dark brown color, with a light tan head. Aroma was earthy hops, lots of roasted malts. Light chocolate. Flavor was light floral notes, lots of herbal, earthy notes. Touch boozy. Okay, actually liked it better than the Stone Enjoy By Black IPA, so there’s that at least.

Pours mahogany into a shaker. Mocha head with good retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Licorice and chocolate aromas. Soft with muted chocolate and bitter espresso upfront turning to soy and licorice in the lasting finish. Aged... but still enjoyable.

65 cl bottle @ hotel room, San Diego. Aroma has licorice root and pine needles. Flavour has licorice root, leather shoes and some sugary tones. Also rye, syrupy notes, resin and pine needles. Oaty feeling here. Finishes with some grapefruity hops and nettles.

650ml bottle

Pours pitch black with a small head. Aroma of roasty malts, salty licorice, grassy hops, pine, resin and hay. Taste is smooth, slightly roasty and salty with loads of licorice, grassy hops, pine, resin and hay. Finish is hoppy, resinous and slightly roasty with some licorice and grassy notes. Pretty good.

Refrigerated brow bomber poured into a snifter. Black with dark brow highlights. Aroma is herbal hops, taste is dark malt and herbal hops.
