Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Notes from April 2010 December-ish canning, Febuary-ish consumption. Standard pint glass pour. A pretty orange whirlwind as it rolls out. Inch & a half of lumpy light tan head. Not quite clear, but a dusty orange amber. Ugly, sticky glass full of residual once it all settles in place, but I guess that's what we're looking for in an IPA eh? :) Smell is catty & piercing with alcohol. Sharp radish-like aroma. Hops are of varnish intensity. I know lots of people appreciate that sort of intensity, but it doesn't do it for me unless it's doing more then clearing my sinuses. No big fruit or floral aspects. A touch of rind, but it's very coarse & unwelcoming. From all the reviews, I'm guessing it's awesome straight off the canning line. Taste is bitter sweet upfront, with dark leafy greens. Sweet honey & cereal grains come in right after turning toasty. Finish is a lingering, dry, acidic rind. Feel is low to mild carbonation, a touch chalky because of the sediment, & it has a bit of a numbing effect on my tongue as well. Alcohol is a bit of a nuisance. Not my favorite Surly beer, but it does have some qualities I can see other people being a fan of.

355ml can. Opalescent, redd-ish, amber colour with average, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, sulphureous head. Piney and resinous, hoppy aroma, slightly toasty and nutty malty background, weak citrusy fruity overtones. Taste is bitter, resinous, piney hoppy and slightly toasty and nutty, malty with very low residual sweetness, hints of pine, resin, hazelnut, lingering, dry finish. Slightly oily texture, smooth and soft, simultaneously dry palate, medium to fine, dense, mildly prickly carbonation. Very clean, homogeneous, fairly dry and bitter, but rather restricted flavour profile - solid.
