90 Shilling is our smooth and complex flagship beer. A medium-bodied amber ale with a distinct burnished copper color and a deeply pleasant aroma. The name 90 Shilling comes from the Scottish method of taxing beer. Only the highest quality beers were taxed 90 Shillings. We think you’ll find this original ale brilliantly refreshing, and worth every Shilling.

Hazy purplish red - minimal lacing - nose of toasted grains, light plum, other more innocuous malt characteristics - moderate malt sweetness, with notes of bread pudding and caramel - medium bitterness throughout, with a lot of toasted cereal grain flavor - balanced and easy-drinking, but rather bland and unimpressive - I usually find Odell beers to be underrated - not this one, though.

A golden amber ale with a thin white head. A pleasant crisp floral hops aroma with light caramel malt. In mouth, a light ale with a nice balance of malt and bitterness. Tasted at Mondiale 2007.

Bottle from D&J Liquor in St. Louis, MO. Date seems to be 100308. Pours a dark coppery amber with a frothy off-white head. Smells malty/treacly. Medium body with frothy carbonation, but it somehow seems thinnish. Flavor is treacly and fairly roasted caramel. It’s sweet, though not sticky sweet. Finish is hardly bitter, but this one works. It has a lot of flavor. It’s really very drinkable. Something in it makes up for the lack of bitter - and strangely enough something like bitter developed on the edges of my tongue after awhile. Interesting stuff.

Bottle from a friend. Best by 11/23/08. Pours a clear ruby red with a medium head. Low retention and lacing. Fruity, malty aroma with a nutty note and some hop presence. Very malty and earthy taste. A green-apple, citrus fruitiness and light hoppiness. Full bodied.

Deep hazy reddish amber coloured body with a large tan head - this one looks nice! Aroma of roasted malt, peanuts, pecans, caramel and a hint of smokiness. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty malt flavours with a heavy dose of nuts, caramel and pit fruits. Aftertaste shows more of the same with bitterness and alcohol around the corner with no complexity in the malt. Overall, a slightly one-sided beer that had the makings of a great beer when seen and smelt. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Goebel Liquors in Wichita, Kansas on 25-March-2008, sampled on 01-August-2008.

12oz bottle -pours a rich tan head that laces and copper color. Aroma is nice medium malt-caramel, citrus/earthy hops. Taste is medium malt-caramel, almost as much hops-earthy/leafy, nutty, roasty, later some citrus. Not quite balanced and a bit thin compared to aroma. OK carbonation. Thanks to chesky-SD via Joe-jwc215 for the trade.
